CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“Make sure there are enough glasses.”

Dave heard Olive call out behind him from the barn that normally housed the operations of Leafton Botanicals. The earthly smell of slowly grilled meat coming from around the building. He was in charge of the meat, like usual, and the two suckling pigs and side of venison that Happy had supplied were on track for being ready in time. They would be fine for a couple of hours, slowly rotating over the low but steady heat of the charcoal. He’d baste them again when he returned.

“I think there are forty, but get sixty just in case.”

He turned and saluted in mock fashion, smiling as she waved him off and disappeared inside. He was pleased to get out of there. Between Olive and the other older ladies—who formed the town’s craft circle, as well as the Jackson’s Bridge Events Committee, the Jackson’s Bridge Welcoming Committee, and the Jackson’s Bridge Fundraising Committee—his presence was unnecessary. Why get into bed with them at all? Dave had thought, but didn’t say. But he suspected he knew the answer. There were a lot of good people relying on the co-operative to make a decent living, and he knew the investment Olive convinced them to make in the new laboratory was weighing heavily on her conscious.

The haze of warm air above the tarmac shimmered, and Dave smiled, grateful that the long days of winter were behind them now. It meant that he’d get busier again, which he was sure how he would manage. Between the outdoor education he taught, working at The Herb Farm, and the guiding Happy organized for him each year, he would be lucky to keep it all together. But there was nothing he could give up or delegate to someone else.

Except maybe Jack.

Olive’s ward was coming along nicely, getting on top of his reading and writing with her help, and the tutor the school had provided with state funding. Dave knew Jack preferred to be outdoors, working the farm. There had been little
