Later, as they resumed their walk, Wells came up to Travers.

‘I don’t think antagonising the Major will get us to London in one piece,’ he said.

‘I’m hungry, Herbert. I need something to distract me from the constant growl in my stomach.’

‘We all could do with a hot meal,’ Wells conceded. ‘However, you know as I do you’ll get nothing but nationalist nonsense from him, no matter how rational your argument.’

Travers took a sip from his flask, considering. He nodded in reluctant agreement. ‘I don’t like it, but you make sense.’

‘Good,’ an obviously relieved Wells said. He looked ahead and saw that the Major had stopped. ‘What now?’ he said.

‘There it is,’ the Major said. ‘London.’

‘No sign of those lights we saw earlier,’ Travers said.

‘They might have come from closer to the coast. Hard to tell at night,’ Crompton said.

‘Where will we shelter?’ Wells asked.

‘The Council has a number of safe houses across the City,’ the Major said. ‘The nearest one is close to Regent’s Park. After, we’ll head for the meeting. Then the Council can decide what to do with Georgina’s information.’
