Frank offered Natalie a cold soda, and the two walked into the kitchen. Andrew knew she could use a breather, but he wanted to see the rest of the video.

He sat in the chair Natalie had been in and fast-forwarded the video. There had to be an explanation for how Lexi’s phone had gotten smashed and thrown under the car.

Three hours after Lexi walked into the woods, a man appeared from the shadows. It was too dark to tell anything about him.

But he went to Lexi’s car. Opened the door. Did something inside—probably destroyed the cushions.

It was too dark and grainy to tell if he’d dropped her cell phone beneath the car. But it had to have been him. Nothing else made sense.

When he was done, he walked away as if nothing had happened.

There was no sign of Lexi.

He called Natalie and Frank back into the office and showed them what he’d found.

“What does this mean? Do you think...” Natalie’s voice trailed off as if she couldn’t finish the thought.

A bad feeling gurgled in his gut, and he could only imagine what Natalie was feeling.

“We don’t know what it means. This guy could’ve taken her somewhere. He could still have her.” Andrew wasn’t sure his theory was solid, but it was the best he could come up with given the circumstances.

Andrew asked for a copy of the video to be sent to his email, and Frank said he would send it over right away. He said he’d also send a copy to the police if they needed that, and Andrew encouraged him to do so. But he told Frank not to send it to Detective Caruso.

Frank gave him an odd look but didn’t question him.

Andrew wasn’t sure if he could trust Caruso yet. The detective wasn’t necessarily a suspect, but he was definitely someone to be cautious around.

Even though it made sense that the person who’d taken Lexi would be the same person who had tried to kill Natalie, Andrew needed to be sure.

Because if two people were involved, then Detective Caruso would be one of his top suspects.

Andrew, Natalie and Rambo left the restaurant and paused in the parking lot, which was beginning to fill up with the evening crowd.

He turned toward Natalie. “I don’t think there’s anything else we can do here.”

A frown tugged at her lips. “It doesn’t seem right just to go back to the cabin and do nothing.”

“Maybe we should regroup. We’ve done a lot here today, and I know you’ve got to be tired. I know you didn’t sleep much last night.”

She stared at him a moment before finally nodding. “Okay then. Let’s get back.”

But Andrew knew she didn’t want to leave. He couldn’t blame her. If he were in her shoes, he’d want to stay here and continue looking also.

They went back to his Bronco, and he put Rambo in the back seat just as before. Then he and Natalie climbed in, and they took off back to the cabin.

The sun would be setting soon, and the sky was already growing gray.
