That’s why he took up with me.” Jonty’s tears now started to flow unhindered. “I don’t deceive myself that he might have really loved me, I know that he didn’t, but I believe that he felt the closest thing to love that he could manage. And when he was gone, I was convinced that I would never again feel such affection for anyone.” He caressed Coppersmith’s cheek. “Got that wrong, too, didn’t I?”
