chapter thirteen

Leif drew his sword as they approached the campsite. They could see bodies settled around the campfire and near the bushes. It was unnaturally quiet. Leif looked to his friends and raised his eyebrow. Tyra shook her head, the doubt obvious. Freya signaled she would move around to the left as Strian moved to the right. Bjorn, Tyra, and Leif moved forward further as they surveyed the scene that lay before them. The crews from their longboats followed as they encircled the camp. There was only one man who sat awake by the fire.

“Leif Ivarrson!” the man called out. “She is gone. No harm has come to her, but I cannot say the same for my people.”

Olaf did not move from his position by the fire. His sword rested across his lap as he continued to stare into the flames. His voice roused several of the warriors who spent the night suffering. With the early morning light, most had recovered enough to sleep off the effects of the last night.

“Who are you?” Leif called back.

“The only one who knows where she went.”

Leif teeth clenched. He was not inclined to go around in circles with the man, but he could not risk not finding out where Sigrid was being held.

“Tell me where she is being kept, and perhaps you will live to see a fair fight.”

“She isn’t here. She’s a very resourceful young woman.”

Leif might have been proud if his bloodlust was not coursing through him hotter and faster than lava down a mountainside.

“I’m in no mood to speak in riddles. Tell me now, or you shall find one of my sister’s arrows sticking from your chest.”

That made Olaf look up as a bush rustled across the fire from him. The tip of an arrow poked through. The movement and Leif’s warning were enough to make Einar’s warriors come to their feet with swords drawn.

“That man is mine. I am sure he knows where she is. And I think he helped her, but I’m not convinced,” Leif whispered to Bjorn and Tyra. The others nodded, and Leif released a bird call that had his army surging forward. He charged to the man who now stood beside the fire.

“Where is she?”

“She left last night. She’s in the hills.”

“Why would she be there? How did she escape? Why do you know this?”

“You speak a lot for a man in battle,” Olaf smirked as their blades whistled along each other.

“I want my woman back, and you know where she is. I’m only letting you live, so I can find her. If you serve no purpose, I will kill you now.” Leif pulled away and swept his sword back to make a slicing move that caught the older man in the ribs. Blood poured forth from the wound.

“She poisoned most of the camp. She put mistletoe leaves into the stew Einar forced her to serve. He thought he could humiliate her, but he gave her the perfect chance to exact her revenge. The others have been ill all night.
