Chapter 18

“I don’t know,” Izzy whispered. A buzzing sensation vibrated every inch of her body. If it wouldn’t hurt so much, she’d scratch the heck out of her itching hands. At least Ruth’s balm was working wonders. Even in a few hours, the burns had healed by twenty-five percent.

“You stole…” Ruth swallowed and shook her hand, like it had fallen asleep. She squinted up at the ceiling. Her voice returned to normal. “No. It’s still there. Holy hell. I don’t understand.”

“Chérie?” Odie ran into the kitchen. “What, ami? Are you all right?” The fierce way he shielded Ruth and glared at everyone made Izzy shrink further back against the doorjamb.

“She.” The tall woman grabbed her head, panting. “She took…” Blinking hard, her gaze lasered onto Kerr and his brothers. “What in the world happened to you?”

Izzy sucked in a breath. The blood smeared over Kerr’s face shocked her heart into motion. “God, you’re hurt.” Because it mattered…why?

Because it did.

“Everyone, into the kitchen.” Ruth snapped to attention and shrugged off her husband. “Let’s get everyone patched up.” The sideways glance through narrowed eyes told Izzy that their conversation wasn’t anywhere close to being over.

What had Izzy done? One minute she had felt a wave of fear and terror come over her like a tidal wave, heavy and propelling her toward the door, thanks to Shelby’s power, she presumed. Ruth rushed to join them. Then in the next minute, her damned itchy hands had latched onto Ruth’s and a burst of…energy? Exhilaration? Adrenaline? Strength? coursed through Izzy. Then it flew out toward Kerr. She had no idea why. Only that it was very important to help him.

Hastily wrapping gauze around her palms and drawing on large vinyl gloves from Ruth’s medical kit, Izzy motioned for Kerr to sit. Wetting a dishrag, she hurried back to him, bent down, and dabbed at his face. She bit her lip. No cuts. No wounds. No source of the bleeding. But yet, there was blood.

And his eyes. The whites were shaded a dark, lurid red, setting off the gold in his brown irises. “What happened to you?” she asked.

Wrapping a hand around her wrist, Kerr smiled. Only, with those eyes, he resembled more of an unhinged zombie than a wry cowboy. Around them, activity swirled as Ruth and Odie steered an off-balance Vaughn to a kitchen chair. Shelby glared at Garrison until he sat next to Vaughn. All three brothers looked like limp dishrags as they slouched and groaned around the table. Hopefully, Sara was distracting Zach and Mr. Taggart, because they shouldn’t have to see their family members in such a state.

Minutes later, Ruth tapped Izzy on the shoulder.

“What?” Multiple sets of eyes settled on Izzy. Her neck warmed.

Vaughn broke the tension and pointed at Kerr. “Your eyes, dude. It’s not a good look. You’re like a creature out of a bad horror movie.” He paused and rested his head on his thick forearms for a second. “Shit, I feel like the south end of a northbound mule,” he muttered, finally lifting his head back up.
