English Vocabulary: It’s Improvement & Expansion

Vocabulary can be defined or explained in many ways. A group of words of any language is called vocabulary or all the words of a language come in the category of vocabulary. Besides phrases are too put in vocabulary. The sum of words used by, understood by, or at the command of a particular person is called vocabulary.A list of words and often phrases, usually arranged alphabetically also can be counted as vocabulary. The language which consists of good vocabulary is considered the best. Now a days English language is the global language and its vocabulary is mixture of many languages of the world like, Greek, Latin, Sanskrit, French and Arabic etc. In the modern age of techonology without the knowledge of English language, the progress of a country seems not possible. Its learning becomes essential and so every person who wants to go on the path of progress must devote himself to learn more and more words of English language. He must try his best to increase his vocabulary.

Ways of improving vocabulary:

There are a number of ways of increasing and improving vocabulary. A few of these are discussed here.

❖ Read, read and read: The more a person reads especially novels and literary works, magazines and newspapers, the more words he will be exposed to. As he reads and uncovers new words, he can delve meaning from the context of the sentence as well as from looking up the definition in a dictionary.

❖ Keep a dictionary and thesaurus handy: when he uncovers a new word, he must look it up in the dictionary to get both its pronunciation and its meaning and next go to the thesaurus and find similar words and phrases and their synonyms and antonyms.

❖ Use a journal: It’s a good idea to keep a running list of the new word he discovers so that he can refer back to the list and slowly build them into his every day vocabulary. Keeping a journal of all his new words can provide positive understanding of the meaning of a new word.

❖ Learn a word a day: Using a word a day calendar or website or developing his own list of words to learn is a great technique. Many people use it to learn new words. This approach may be too rigid for some, so even if a person uses this method, must not feel hurt but learn a new word every day.

❖ Go back to roots: One of the most powerful tools for learning new words and for deciphering the meaning of other new words is studying Latin and Greek roots. Latin and Greek elements (prefixes, roots and suffixes) are a significant part of the English language and a great tool for learning new words.

❖ Play some games: Word games that challenge a reader and help him discover new meaning and new words are a great fun tool in his quest for expanding his vocabulary. Examples include crosswords puzzles, anagrams word jumble etc.
