Relief washed over Sonya when Maria left the room. She loved her friend, but she wanted to be alone. It was exhausting pretending everything was fine.

She hadn’t cried since the moment she walked away from Arina. She hurt, but she didn’t cry. It was weird, as tears normally came easily to her. She’d cried plenty of times after a disappointing gymnastics meet. She cried that morning after one fall too many during training. She cried when her brother stole her favorite plush toy. Why wasn’t she crying over losing her greatest love?

Maybe the pain was so overwhelming it overflowed her soul to the point where shedding tears became impossible. Like a closed dam holding her emotions in. She could only hope the doors were strong enough because she didn’t think she would be capable to stop crying if she ever started. She understood then that crying wasn’t synonymous with pain. Sometimes the pain was so immense it could turn into numbness instead as a form of self-defense.

Amid her sadness, Sonya wondered if she’d made the right choice. She often let emotion dictate her actions, only to regret it later. When she got frustrated at the gym, she often exclaimed, “I quit gymnastics,” and left for hours, even days. Her coach didn’t run after her anymore; she always came back.

Her break up with Arina was the same. As soon as she walked away and the emptiness of Arina’s absence started weighing on her, she wanted to turn around and run into her arms. Forget her doubts and fears and let Arina protect her, as she always had.

It was too late now. She’d caught Arina looking at her from afar, her eyes always full of pain. It wouldn’t be fair to ask Arina for her love again when she didn’t know if she could embrace everything that came with it. Arina wanted a family, a life together. Even if it had to be hidden from the outside world. Sonya wasn’t sure she was ready to promise that future.

Yes, they had promised each other forever. But a promise was just a hope, an intention. Even fairy tales have an ending. Maybe this was theirs.
