Chapter Nineteen

STEVEN BECAME HUMAN again, Samael’s Lash over his back.

Tessa stood in the water of the parking lot, smoking, an arm across her chest. She craned her neck at the Casa Bonita bell with the Cruxis dome built around it. The sky was full of stars.

“Without the city lights, the sky is pretty,” she said. When she took a drag, the cherry of her cigarette glowed. “Your Shaze barbecue didn’t have much smoke. You could barely see a thing.”

Aria went and touched Tessa’s back. “Until we know more, we have to be both callous and careful. The Hybrith we fought across the street was powerful. I would not want to face five at once.”

Tessa stepped away. “Yeah, I know. I’m being the overly sensitive girl in the zombie movie that is always wrong. You shoot Grandma in the head after she turns. But after all the death and murder, us joining in on the fun bothers me.”

“Bothers me too,” Steven said. “But losing one of you would hurt worse.”

Tessa flicked her butt away. “Let’s go check on Zoey.” She lifted them all up to the roof of the store.

Zoey was awake, holding Mouse’s hand. Her legs were bare, but she’d slipped on a shirt. She glanced up. Dark circles surrounded her eyes. “Steven, oh, Steven, it’s so good to smell you again. I just woke up.”

Steven crouched and caressed her hair. It was rough, coarse, and thick. Nonetheless, he loved touching it, trying to brush down some of her frizz. “How do you feel?”

“Tired.” Zoey closed her eyes. Then she grinned. “But I got him. The shadow runner.”

“Uh, I love Shadow Run,” Tessa said. “We’ll have to call that breed of Hybrith something different.”

“Shadow walker?” Mouse suggested.

Tessa shot down that as well. “No, there’s a book called Shadow Walker, and I love that too.”

“It doesn’t matter,” Aria said. “They are Hybrith, and we’ll kill them.”

“It hurt me to kill him,” Zoey said in a low voice. “The Shaze pull some of my Animus away. When I killed the shadower, it took it all away.”

“Shadower.” Steven kissed Zoey’s cheek. “Let’s go with that.”

“AnimusChain.” The barista’s eyes flashed pink and she held out a hand. “Her core appears to be okay, a nice gold color, spinning nicely. I think Zoey will be okay.” She let the spell lapse.

Zoey touched her forehead to Steven’s. “Is it because I bit that thing? You think I might be infected?”

“Fuck,” Mouse hissed.

Tessa wasn’t done. “FleshForge.” She bent, crouching between Mouse and Steven. She touched Zoey’s bare legs. The pink light mixed with Zoey’s gold color, until Tessa ended the magic. “Her cells seem okay as well. Ugh, I’m low on Animus. Again.”

“More banging. I never would’ve guessed that the Zothoric War would be so hard on my coochie,” Mouse said wearily. “And I need a shower. Like with hot water. Can we make that happen? I need to make that happen.”

An idea struck Steven. “I think I can accommodate you. But let’s leave in case another swarm comes to investigate the Cruxis.
