He tried to bite down his frustration, clenching his hands into fists so tight it hurt. Never in his life had he experienced this kind of helplessness at a situation. He also never felt so frustrated because there was nothing he could do about it. It all contributed to the anger at himself for not being able to let it affect him so much.
He had prepared himself for tonight. Or he thought he had.
Glaring at the table next to him, Daniel struggled to control his emotions. He hated the jealousy spreading like wildfire through him. He didn't want to see her with someone else. She was laughing, talking and just being herselfâbeautiful and self-assured. Why couldn't it have been him? Why was she here with Jesse Summers, Angie's twin brother?
For one breath-taking moment, he caught her eyes and held it, but then she looked away again to talk to her companion.
Daniel had long ago given up on holding his glass in his hands. With the frustration boiling inside of him, he might cling it so tight it will break.
He had opted for juice tonight because alcohol might be the last bit of fuel which would spark his anger.
Matthew bumped his arm and said, "Relax, Cappie. Everyone will pick up on your mood. Tone it down."
Daniel pulled his eyes from their neighbouring table and its occupants to Matthew. Matthew was right, but he had tried all his tested methods to get control, and he was battling.
"Yeah, sorry."
Daniel studied Matthew, noticing for the first time the tension lines on his friend's face. Matthew's face didn't look much different from Daniel's own. Every time he looked in the same direction as Daniel's cause of frustration, he scowled. Daniel didn't have to wonder why. Matthew was fighting the same emotions he was struggling with, and he sighed.
He looked at the rest of the occupants at his table. They were all single men belonging to the senior squad except Hannah and Christopher's bimbo. André was talking to Jakes, who looked the same as Daniel and Matthew. To describe Jakes' face as thunderous was, to put it mildly, but Daniel couldn't blame him. Geez, what had Angie been thinking, going with Rick Walters? Rick was the biggest womaniser in the country. And why had Rick done that, knowing Jakes' feelings?
Daniel slid his gaze to Rick, studying him. With sudden insight, he wondered if Rick was not playing a role, trying to bait Jakes to react. Daniel sighed. He knew Jakes too well, and the man would not fall for it. His resolve was remarkable, considering what he had been through with his ex. No, Daniel worried that Rick's plan might backfire.
He looked back at Jakes, who was still playing with the rubber band on his arm. At least he was listening to André's quiet instructions. Jakes was in good hands, but Daniel doubted if the man next to Jakes was. Christopher looked bored with his date's mindless chatter, but there was more. Judging by the scowls, Christopher should join Matthew, Jakes and Daniel's club.
