Verizon’s investigative unit was housed in an austere frosty suite on a high floor in the Verizon Tower, the investigators, mostly retired law enforcement, not much more colorful themselves.

“I got stopped up here, so I might be a little late.”

It was a recording of Diaz’s last message to his wife, Mary playing it for Ray Scanlon, a former detective who retired out of the NYPD Intelligence Bureau and was the former husband of Mary’s former best friend.

“‘Up here’ so, I’m thinking ‘upstate’?” she said handing him Diaz’s phone number.

“Better be,” he said. “Too many cell towers down here, you’d go nuts trying to pinpoint the location.” Then, “You can’t give me more to go on?”

“Sorry.”

“I’m going to need some time.”

“Gotta make some calls?”

The joke bombed, Mary wondering if her lame quip technically qualified as a pun.

“I’ll call you in a few days, no guarantees.”
