“Law.”

Lawrence blinked up at Win. “Yes?” He was still trying to digest the dinner Graham had put together—roast, potatoes, carrots, homemade bread. Lawrence had eaten too much, and he was feeling it.

“Griffith needs help.”

That got Lawrence right out of his food coma. He sprang up, pushing Ulric’s legs off his lap. “What? What happened? Where is he?”

“Come with me.”

Lawrence wanted to rush Win as they went to his office, but Win was going as fast as he could. Besides, if Griffith was about to be hurt, Win would have sent the first person who could have taken care of it. He wouldn’t have come back to the kitchen to get Lawrence.

“What happened?” Lawrence asked again as soon as they were in Win’s office. Beck was there, typing away on his computer. He didn’t even look up, but Lawrence didn’t care.

“He texted me an SOS. I had Beck track him through his phone. He’s at his parents’ house.”

“I thought you told him to stay away from his father?”

“I told him the council had decided he shouldn’t try to find out more about what his father is doing. The man is still his father, though. We can’t exactly force him to stay away from him.”

“You know he went there to get answers.” If there was one thing Lawrence was sure of, it was that.

“That’s what I suspect, yes. He was keen on helping, on trying to redeem himself.”

“He doesn’t need to redeem himself. He hasn’t done anything. And what’s going on? Why is he sending you an SOS from his father’s house?” He’d probably tried to get the answers and hadn’t been discreet about it. His father would have realized what was going on, at least in part. What was he going to do? Would he go as far as hurting his only son?

“We don’t know, but Dasha is going to shimmer you there. Update us when you can. I’ll have everyone on standby, just in case.” Win squeezed Lawrence’s shoulder. “Go to him and make sure he’s safe.”

He didn’t have to say it twice. It didn’t look like anyone knew what was going on, so Lawrence was going to have to go in blind.

It wouldn’t be the first time, and it wouldn’t be the last.

Dasha was waiting in the hallway. He didn’t say anything, just grabbed Lawrence’s hand. Lawrence was lucky Win had thought about grabbing weapons on their way to his office.

“Damn it.”

Lawrence looked around. They were in a backyard. The lights in the house in front of them were on, and from where they were, Lawrence could see Griffith.

He was sitting at a table with an older man who had to be his father. He didn’t quite look like the picture Win had of him, but then, having a black heart would make you look older and uglier.

“The house is shielded,” Dasha said.

Of course it was. “Go back and grab a few people, just in case. I’m going in.”

“Human or snake?”

“Probably snake. I’ll be able to
