âLaw.â
Lawrence blinked up at Win. âYes?â He was still trying to digest the dinner Graham had put togetherâroast, potatoes, carrots, homemade bread. Lawrence had eaten too much, and he was feeling it.
âGriffith needs help.â
That got Lawrence right out of his food coma. He sprang up, pushing Ulricâs legs off his lap. âWhat? What happened? Where is he?â
âCome with me.â
Lawrence wanted to rush Win as they went to his office, but Win was going as fast as he could. Besides, if Griffith was about to be hurt, Win would have sent the first person who could have taken care of it. He wouldnât have come back to the kitchen to get Lawrence.
âWhat happened?â Lawrence asked again as soon as they were in Winâs office. Beck was there, typing away on his computer. He didnât even look up, but Lawrence didnât care.
âHe texted me an SOS. I had Beck track him through his phone. Heâs at his parentsâ house.â
âI thought you told him to stay away from his father?â
âI told him the council had decided he shouldnât try to find out more about what his father is doing. The man is still his father, though. We canât exactly force him to stay away from him.â
âYou know he went there to get answers.â If there was one thing Lawrence was sure of, it was that.
âThatâs what I suspect, yes. He was keen on helping, on trying to redeem himself.â
âHe doesnât need to redeem himself. He hasnât done anything. And whatâs going on? Why is he sending you an SOS from his fatherâs house?â Heâd probably tried to get the answers and hadnât been discreet about it. His father would have realized what was going on, at least in part. What was he going to do? Would he go as far as hurting his only son?
âWe donât know, but Dasha is going to shimmer you there. Update us when you can. Iâll have everyone on standby, just in case.â Win squeezed Lawrenceâs shoulder. âGo to him and make sure heâs safe.â
He didnât have to say it twice. It didnât look like anyone knew what was going on, so Lawrence was going to have to go in blind.
It wouldnât be the first time, and it wouldnât be the last.
Dasha was waiting in the hallway. He didnât say anything, just grabbed Lawrenceâs hand. Lawrence was lucky Win had thought about grabbing weapons on their way to his office.
âDamn it.â
Lawrence looked around. They were in a backyard. The lights in the house in front of them were on, and from where they were, Lawrence could see Griffith.
He was sitting at a table with an older man who had to be his father. He didnât quite look like the picture Win had of him, but then, having a black heart would make you look older and uglier.
âThe house is shielded,â Dasha said.
Of course it was. âGo back and grab a few people, just in case. Iâm going in.â
âHuman or snake?â
âProbably snake. Iâll be able to
