Relief flooded Liam once the blizzard passed, and they could call for local police support. Clear Mountain cops arrived to take the suspects into custody. During their interview of Doug, he confessed and divulged they hid the money and jewelry in Vince’s room. The officers searched the room and found the stolen items, confirming that they were the thieves.

Brooke and Liam were waiting in the corner of the café for the on-site investigation to wrap up.

“How are you feeling?” Brooke asked, as she eyed him, touching his shoulder.

“It hurts, but I’ll be okay,” he said as he gingerly rotated his arm.

“I’m glad it wasn’t worse. I only have basic first aid training.”

“You did a great job of patching me up.”

“She sure did,” Clear Mountain K-9 Officer Zach Turner agreed, with his dog Harley beside him.

“Not to mention, figuring out who was responsible for stealing the items from the hotel room,” fellow K-9 Officer Aiden O’Connell stated as he joined them with his dog Cooper. “You did a great job, Officer Patterson. You should be proud of yourself.”

“We just had an officer move away, leaving an opening at our substation. You should apply for the position,” Zach suggested. Giving her a flirtatious smile, he added, “We could use a little more feminine charm on the Clear Mountain team.”

Liam immediately went from being grateful for Zach’s presence to wishing he would go away. His eyes narrowed, and he stiffened with irritation at the officer’s crassness.

Not only was it disrespectful to talk to Brooke that way, Liam didn’t like another man flirting with her in front of him. No way am I letting this guy swoop in and hit on Brooke.

Before Liam could say anything to combat the officer’s advances, Brooke shook her head. “Thanks, but I have no desire to transfer to a place that wants me for my ‘feminine charms.’ Besides, I was planning to test for detective during the next opening. I don’t want to transfer to another substation where I end up at the bottom of the pile again.”

Liam smiled with satisfaction. He should’ve figured he didn’t need to interject on Brooke’s behalf. She was quite capable of defending herself.

“Sorry, meant nothing negative by it,” Zach said with a shrug. Turning to his partner, Aiden, he added, “I’ll head to the car. Catch up with me when you’re ready to take the suspects over to the jail.” Zach sauntered off towards the exit of the lodge.

Once he was gone, Aiden turned to face Brooke and Liam. “I’m sorry about my partner. He can’t help himself when he’s around women. He’s not wrong though; there is an opening at our substation. We could use someone with your set of investigative skills. Think about it.”

Brooke nodded. “Thanks for the offer. Like I said, I’m happy where I’m at, but it’s nice to know there’s other options if that should change.”

“Sounds good. We have your statement and contact information for any follow-up we might need,” Aiden said before he left with his K-9 partner.
