The next day after morning skate, he hopped in his truck and headed straight for Java Love. As he parked, he could see Veronica at the counter.

Hurrying into the coffee shop, he was welcomed with the familiar aroma he was growing so accustomed to. “Veronica,” he called before she could run into the back room.

She smiled but not the wide, sweet grin he was used to. This one was forced, and it pained him to see that she was missing her glowing personality. And it was all his fault.

“Nathan, hi. I was just about to—” She pointed toward the back room.

“I was hoping to catch you.”

“Yeah, about that. Becky can get your order, I have to—” Again she looked toward the back room as if it was where she wanted to be.

“Can you just give me a few minutes? Please?” He didn’t ever beg. No one ever made him. Nothing was ever big enough to beg for. However, he would beg for a minute of her time.

Defeated, she shrugged her shoulders. “Sure. Becky, can you watch the counter? Sharen is in the back if you need anything.” She turned her attention to Nathan. “Can I get you a coffee?”

“Actually, I wouldn’t mind one of those shortbread things you made me the other day.”

She simply nodded and began to make the drink.

Becky looked at the coffee Veronica was making and then to Nathan. “That will be five seventy-five.”

“Oh, Becky, no, it’s on the hou—”

Before Veronica could get the words out, Nathan handed the cashier a twenty. “Put the change in the tip jar.”

Veronica shook her head and sighed. When the coffee was ready she pointed to a table in the corner. “We can sit there.”

Nathan followed her. She wasn’t her usual bubbly and overbearing self. He enjoyed her somewhat controlling personality. It was adorable and unpredictable. Today her shoulders were slumping and her movements were slower too.

Sitting across from one another, Nathan reached for her hand over the table. She tried to pull it away, but she wasn’t quick enough. Maybe she wasn’t really trying to be.

“Are we okay?” Nathan asked.

“It’s a lot to think about, Nathan. I really do need some time.”

He had hurt her. With all his good intentions, he still ended up hurting her.

“Okay. We can give it a few days. Ask me anything you want. Hell, we can even Google me together if you want. Or you can have your own personal Q&A with me. I’ll be an open book. I promise. I can even take you down to the arena, show you around. I’ll show you anything you want, take you anywhere, and tell you anything.” He had never wanted something so much in his life than he wanted her. He would do anything to keep her from ending it.

“Nathan.” She pulled her hand away and dropped it to her lap. “I don’t mean just a few days. I think we need to backup. We missed a step, you know, the part where I get to know you.
