Trina parked under the house and jumped out to get her grandmotherâs door. âHang on, Mimi. Iâll get the elevator down here, too.â
âThanks, sweetness. That was quite a day of shopping.â
Trina opened Margoâs door as well. âThat was a ton of shopping. Donât worry about the packages, Iâll bring them up. You two just go on and get in the elevator.â
âIâm old, Iâm not dead,â Margo muttered.
Trina ignored the comment and ran over to the elevator to push the button. She glanced toward the water before returning to get the packages out of the car. Kat was lounging by the pool, reading.
Trina wondered if sheâd care if Trina joined her. After she got her grandmother, Margo, and the packages inside, of course. She went back to the car. Mimi and Margo were gathering their purses and making their way to the elevator.
Trina opened the back of the car and got the bags out. Wasnât all that much. A small shopping bag from Guilfordâs with a box of chocolate-covered cherries, one of Mimiâs favorites, and a bag of chocolate-covered raisins for Trinaâs mom, something she loved. Mimi had also bought a new straw hat to wear on the beach.
Margo had a few more bags. Sheâd bought a pair of sandals, pretty leather things with little cork wedges. A floaty chiffon top from one of the pricey ladies boutiques. And a couple of books at Beachside Bookstore.
Trina had gotten a magazine in there and Mimi had picked up a new book of crossword puzzles.
All in all, a very successful trip. Made even better by two things: Margoâs generous treat of lunch, and her agreeing to let Trina give her some highlights.
In truth, thatâs what Trina was most excited about. Nervous, too, because Margo was probably the most important client sheâd ever had, outside of the mayorâs assistant, who came in every couple of months for a full head of highlights herself.
Trina scooped up all the bags and ran to the elevator.
âDid you lock the car?â Mimi asked.
âNot yet, but Iâm coming back down. I can always do it from the porch.â
âAll right,â Mimi said. âJust donât forget, crime is everywhere these days.â
Margo looked at her as the elevator doors closed. âI agree with you, but Diamond Beach still seems very safe to me.â
âLetâs hope so,â Mimi said. âIâd hate to see this place ruined.â
âSame here,â Margo agreed.
Trina kept her head forward and smiled so neither one of them could see her. They were actually getting along, which to her meant the trip had been a success. She was tickled pink about it, too.
She and Mimi got off the elevator on the first floor. She handed Margo her bags. âThanks again for lunch. I canât wait to do your hair.â
Margoâs smile looked hesitant. âYes, about thatâ¦â
âDonât be nervous,â Trina said. âIf you really hate it, I can always change it back.â
That seemed to surprise Margo. âYou can?â
âOh, sure.â
âOh. All right then.â Margo nodded. âSee you later.â
Trina stepped out of the doors so they could close.
