Chapter Seventeen

I swayed on my knees, the hard ground biting my skin through my pants. Exhaustion threatened to pull me to the ground. I sat back on my heels, rubbing my temples with shaking fingers. Telsa stared at me as though I’d puked on her boots.

“Why would the Air Eyid start a battle?” Telsa asked.

“It’s not like they tell me anything.” I shrugged. “If you ask me, the Eyids are an unstable bunch. They don’t seem to care when mortals get caught up in their little fights.”

Telsa stared into the distance then murmured the answer to her own question. “Unrest between the Eyids grows stronger. It’s not just the Fire Eyid who craves power.” She looked down her nose at me. “Why is Haley still on the ground?”

I ignored her. Soltar was the one who wanted to take control of Eyidora, not the Air Eyid.

Right?

“Is Haley too weak to get up?” Telsa asked, her tone layered with sarcasm.

“Shut up.”

Elana ran up behind Telsa. “What has happened?”

I regained my feet. My pants were torn at one knee, and my soot-covered hands were streaked with red scratches. I picked at a ragged nail, peeling off a torn piece and flicking it to the ground. “I almost got crushed by a tree, almost caught on fire, and almost fell into a hole.”

“Ho!” Luke boomed behind Elana. “It’s good Telsa was here to help Haley.”

“Right. Telsa stood there and did nothing.”

Tuggin came next. “How is it that Telsa arrived so quickly?”

My lip curled. “And how is it that you didn’t?”

Tuggin cocked his head, but didn’t answer.

“Then who rescued you?” Elana asked.

“I rescued myself.” I rubbed my forehead. The cold headache was back.

Tuggin studied me for a minute before turning to Telsa. “You did not come to her aide?”

“Hut.” Telsa lifted her chin.

“Telsa,” Luke scolded, but he was laughing.

I wondered what he thought was so hilarious.

Telsa said, “Does Tuggin think Haley too weak to help herself? Doesn’t Tuggin believe Haley is the all-powerful Eyid-emos, come to save this globe?”

Tuggin opened his mouth, but after a glance at me, snapped it shut. When he remained silent, Telsa laughed. I clenched my fists. How quaint that Luke and Telsa found my near-death experience so entertaining.

“Haley must repeat what Haley told Telsa,” Telsa ordered.

I pinched my bottom lip. “I just saw the Air Eyid start a fight with the Land Eyid.”

“Air?” Elana clutched Luke’s arm. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, but then the Fire Eyid sort of got involved, too.”

Tuggin’s gaze slid from my face, down my neck, and landed on the Air Eyid stone hanging from its chain. “Involved, how?”

I stuffed the necklace under my jacket. “It seemed like fire and air were ganging up on land.” My voice faded. “Or something.”

Luke searched the area. “That’s interesting.”

“Indeed,” Tuggin murmured. “Fire and air working together.”

I didn’t like the way Tuggin eyeballed me, most likely remembering how I used to be into Ian, and how Ian had wanted me to team up with him. Maybe Tuggin thought I was going back there.
