THE COMMISSION TAKES OUT a stack of drug dealers from the Cross but not the demand. Louis has no interest or expertise in drug dealing but DK, who is fresh out of jail, is more than willing and interested to fill that vacuum. DK – a heroin addict with a rage problem who has turned on everybody he has ever worked with.

Despite his reputation in the media, Louis Bayeh’s main strength over the years is the perception that we – Sam and I – have his back, which we did up until the point I broke ties when Billy got arrested. In the summer of 1996–97 we hear that three different factions have joined forces and decided they want to take over running the Cross. The threat is so serious that the police even take the time to confirm it with me.

The first play DK makes is just before Sam is locked up with his fellow Nomads. He builds a force of maybe forty serious boys, and his lower minions start spreading the word that he will soon be on his way down to the street to make one big play nobody will forget or recover from. When the night arrives, it’s Sam who hears first. He calls me and says, ‘DK’s on his way – it’s time to clean house.’ A call I’d been dying to receive. That night Sam and I stage our first big act of public unity.

Between us we call in every person we have, and by 10 pm that night we have two hundred people. My guys are standing in suits on the western side of Darlinghurst Road, while Sam’s leather-clad guys line the eastern side of the street. Even though I don’t have a photo of it, I can guarantee you there are police surveillance photos of this scene floating around somewhere. We stand in huddles trying to not look obvious . . . but that was ridiculous. Everyone stood out like dogs’ balls while we wait for DK’s gang to enter the street. Shortly after ten a convoy of cars rolls by really slowly, with DK’s senior guys staring out, wide-eyed at the display. The cars move through, and someone makes a phone call from one of them because DK never turns up.

This was a usual tactic by this cock; it’s like he’s read the book The Art of War, even though I’m sure he can’t fucking read. The book mentions ‘Force him to reveal himself, so as to find out his vulnerable spots’ and retreat when outnumbered. I’m surprised at how many guys we were able to muster. It wasn’t just the guys we called in; they all brought at least one or two friends. Neither one of us had ever made a call like this before, bringing all of our combined assets to the street.

A very senior policeman walks up to me after and says, ‘This is too much power for one person.’

I say, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on Sam.
