Sabina had started to wonder if there would ever be bells and whistles in her life.

And now she knew.

Unfortunately, hearing bells peal when kissing your sister’s boyfriend ranked right up there with adultery and other deadly sins.

So Sabina drove like a crazy woman, down Route 321 and off into the middle of nowhere. She couldn’t go home. She couldn’t face Lucy. Or Momma.

Or anyone.

Not even her good friends like Jenny or Maryanne or Annie Jasper.

What was she going to do?

She pulled the van to the side of the road, not far from the public landing along the Edisto River, and sat there reliving the feel of Ross’s lips and the heat of his body until she recognized how dangerous even thinking about him had become.

Had she given Ross the wrong idea when she offered the loan? Did he think she was looking for something hot and temporary with him?

She didn’t see Ross as the kind of guy who played around on his girlfriend. Especially not after listening to him pour out his sorrow that night at Dot’s. His wife had been unfaithful to him, and he was still torn up about that. She’d heard the pain in his voice that night.

So if he kissed her… then…

Oh, boy.

Sabina should have slapped his face or something. But no, she had just stood there, enjoying the hell out of that kiss.

She needed to go on her vacation now.

Unfortunately, she had a craft fair to organize, a sister to marry off, and a house renovation to pay for. So a monthlong escape was not in the cards.

But she could go picking. There was an estate sale tomorrow up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She could go up there and stay at her favorite B&B and leave Lucy and Ross to themselves. And maybe that would send Ross the right message.

She was mulling over this plan when her phone rang. It was uncanny how quickly people managed to find her when the serious crap went down. She yanked the phone out of her purse, ready to send Momma to voice mail, only to discover that the caller was Layton Webster.

No-bells-or-whistles Layton.

She stared at the phone for a couple of seconds. Maybe Layton was the answer to her prayers. Bells and whistles notwithstanding, the guy was prime husband material.

What was not to like about him? Chemistry was dangerous, especially since this forbidden desire had put Sabina in the position of hurting her sister.

So Sabina pressed the talk button. “Hey, Layton, what’s up?”

“Not much. I was just talking to Lucy, and I’m pleased that she’s accepted the job.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful news.”

“And I was wondering if you wanted to go to dinner with me tomorrow night.”

“Oh, well, uh, to tell you the truth, I was thinking about getting the heck out of Dodge before someone volunteers me for another committee, or Momma ropes me into helping her select the boutonnieres for the groomsmen.”

“Another picking trip?”

“I was planning to go up to Fayetteville, spend the night at a B and B up there, and then take my time coming home.
