This sordid history, perhaps only known by the FBI and not MLB, was not the cause for Mantle’s banishment from baseball in 1983. Well after his playing days, Mantle was hired as a meet-and-greet goodwill ambassador at the Claridge Casino in Atlantic City. Despite the innocence of his position at the casino, as sports gambling was illegal in New Jersey, MLB commissioner Bowie Kuhn wanted to keep baseball’s anti-gambling rule strictly enforced. He presented Mantle with an ultimatum: baseball or the casino. Mantle chose the job, and Kuhn followed through on his threat, kicking The Mick out of the game. This ejection, which was rescinded in 1985, never eliminated Mantle from the Hall of Fame which he had entered in 1974.
