Mark bombed the pick-up truck down the M5 until they got stuck behind clogged up traffic coming into Stoke-on-Trent. It had taken them hours to navigate their way there after having found the pick-up, idling at a junction with no driver in sight. The half tank of fuel gave them no real indication of how long it had been sat there unoccupied, but they jumped in it and made their getaway, only to hit the hold-up at Stoke. Using grass verges and a bit of off-roading, Mark steered them into back streets (and several dead ends) before they found their way back onto the M5, heading towards Worcester.

Lucy tried her best to read a weathered road map book they'd found in the boot. With navigation down on their now-obsolete phones, they'd had to go old school. Sam sat in the back, staring at everything and nothing as they drove, sinking into a shell. He hadn't asked Mark about his mother, but Mark knew that's what he was thinking about.

Wind flurried through Mark's window as they headed south, blowing dust from the dashboard and giving the vehicle a good clean inside. If he had to guess he would've said that the pick-up belonged to a builder or plasterer or someone along those lines.

"I think maybe we head east at either Gloucester or Bristol," Lucy said, her face buried deep in the book. "Bristol keeps us on the motorways. Gloucester takes us down an…. A road, I think."

Mark chewed his lip. Bristol was a heck of a detour.

"What do you think, buddy?" he threw back at Sam to try and keep him engaged but the boy said nothing.

Lucy glanced back over her shoulder. Her face was as emotionless as Sam's. She flicked a glance at Mark before hiding in the book again. Had she the faint look of disappointment on her face?

"Bristol is a way out," he said, trying to ignore the feeling in his gut. "But I think that's the M4 from there to...to..." he couldn't think of the place.

"Newbury?" Lucy sounded equally as unsure, but at least she had a guide to try and use.

"Maybe," Mark said.

Cars and trucks tore past them on both sides of the motorway. A few cars were parked on the hard shoulder or actually abandoned in lanes, but they didn't stop to investigate. No one else stopped either. Lucy and Mark had already established a rule that they wouldn't pick anyone up. They would travel as light as possible, and for that, after the episode with the school kids, Mark was glad.

Although he did wonder how they were getting on at Simon and Liz's.

He side-eyed Lucy as she studied the map like it was Egyptian hieroglyphics. She was pretty enough, if a little plain, but he was no oil-painting himself. He watched as she moved a bang of dark hair from her face, suddenly looking at him. He put his eyes back on the road. When he'd told her they were heading for the south coast, she had asked why.
