Chapter Seven

After several minutes, James swore, “Well, fuck...”

They all gathered around the screens to see that very same cycle just a half block down the road. But with no rider.

James sped up the time frame and they again focused on the cycle. The rider in a dark hoodie got back on the bike and followed the car with the four men.

“Shit, so what player is this?” Bastian muttered.

“We can’t know, I couldn’t get a close up on the plate,” James replied.

“We don’t need a plate,” Lancelot spoke up.

They all looked over at him. He reached down to his bag and picked up a device.

“You tracked it!” James exclaimed. “Damn, that was smart.”

Lancelot gave him a nod. He looked over at Bastian and Bane, then at Frank. “I want permission to go after this person and bring them back here.”

“Like you are volunteering for this?” James looked shocked. “This could be a heavy hitter.”

Lancelot again knelt down and reached into his bag. He pulled out a bright colored item and held it up.

Bane smirked as he stared at the object. “A tranc.”

“Yeah, I’m not a killer nor am I an idiot.” Lancelot dropped it back into the bag.

Bane actually smiled now. “Anyone can be pushed to kill.”

Lancelot slowly shook his head. “I made a vow that I would not take a life.”

“So what if you were cornered?” Orrin asked.

“Yeah, what would you do then?” Cane added.

“I have ways to take people down with no killing.”

Bane stepped closer to him and looked right into his eyes. “Was this vow like with a group of some kind?”

Lancelot showed no fear of Bane, nor did he falter as he replied, “Maybe.”

Bane stepped back. “Where is it on your person?”

Lancelot stared back at him.

“Where is what?” James looked back and forth at them.

Lancelot reached into his shirt and pulled out a medallion on a silver chain.

Bane did not even have to look at it closely. “I should have guessed.”

“Guessed what?” James spoke louder this time. “Can you two clue the rest of us in on this?”

Bane placed his hands behind his back. “I won’t tell them. But you can.” He stared at Lancelot.

“He doesn’t have to tell anyone,” Frank piped up. “You need to respect his rights.”

Lancelot looked over at Frank. “I am willing to. I surely don’t want mistrust here.”

Frank sighed and shook his head.

“Would someone, anyone, explain this to me?” James whined.

Lancelot gave Bane a nod. “You seem to have knowledge beyond what most would think. You can explain it. If you are willing to.”

Bane took a deep breath. “I can.” He looked around as he spoke, “The Benedictines, officially the Order of Saint Benedict. In Latin, it is Ordo Sancti Benedicti. They are a monastic religious order of the Catholic Church following the Rule of Saint Benedict. They are also sometimes called the Black Monks, in reference to the color of their religious habits which were usually all black.” He cocked his head at Lancelot. “Which obviously, you do not wear anymore.”

Lancelot nodded.
