Chapter 11

Lamia waited until she could no longer hear the steady sounds of dead weight dragging over stone before she dared to move. She would have to act fast if she was going to get away. She shivered in the cold of the room and refastened her shirt. As she pulled on her combat boots she berated herself for being insane enough to think Nemesis had changed for the better. If anything, he had only gotten worse over the years she had been gone, definitely crazier. She skipped the eyelets and wrapped the laces of her boots around her ankles, knotting them hastily while trying to remain standing.

Boots laced, she ran to the window and stared down. She needed to know if Nemesis had truly killed Janos, and she wanted to know her odds if she was going to try to escape. The dying embers of a fire still smoldered beneath the curling white tendrils of fog covering the ground, and the light turned the immediate area a dull orange. The woods around the castle reached up in a blackened skeletal collective, twisting their gnarled branch-like fingers toward the sky, as if the swirling vapor was an ocean and the trees were all drowning men.

A soft sigh came from behind her and she spun to face into the room. In the darkest corner she could make out a flicker of movement, a translucent hand, a hollow face. Lamia shivered uncontrollably as she backed in the opposite direction of the shadow.

“Oh fuck this,” she whispered, stumbling backward into the bed as it drew across her escape route. “I can’t take any more.”

“He lied.” The shadow moved with her, matching her moves. “You are here….”

The shadow man moved out of the light without another word, but the sickly smile on the mouth said it all for him: he was far from dead.

Without further hesitation she crept as quickly and as quietly out into the hallway as she could, checking around corners to make sure Nemesis wasn't on his way back to the bedroom. Going outside was pointless, there were too many of his skeletons wandering around waiting for something to happen, along with the lurking entity she couldn’t see. Staying in the bedroom only ensured that the thing hiding in the shadows would still be there, scaring the holy hell out of her, whether or not he was dead.

She was going to have to hide somewhere until she could figure out what to do. An idea came to her suddenly and she raced toward the stairs, running down them two at a time. Nyvek would help her, she would just need to get down to the dungeon without anyone knowing.

As Lamia rounded a corner she ran headlong into Nemesis. He looked down at her with a grunt of surprise.

“Lamia! What are you doing down here? Didn't I tell you to wait for me upstairs?”

The question was half playful, half angry. Lamia stared up at him for only a moment before she turned and ran.
