Everyone was by the pool when Kate emerged from the house. She watched them for a few minutes, thinking how she wished she could be relaxing with them. Instead, she was losing herself in the past.

She worried they were judging her. What had she been thinking, keeping this from them? She would have to apologize to Molly and Andrew. She wasn’t sure how much she wanted to divulge, but she couldn’t keep pretending everyone was okay. The cat was already out of the bag and she had to do damage control.

She saw Molly looking at her. Kate waved and Molly looked quickly away, the awkwardness lingering in the air.

Kate sat down in the lounge chair that was next to Alice. She looked at Chloe. She looked like a young Grace Kelly, Kate thought.

“Chloe seems to have fit in perfectly,” Alice said.

Kate shifted in her seat uncomfortably. “I ran into Barbara, her cousin, in town. It was weird,” Kate whispered.

“Weird?” Alice asked.

“She seemed aggressive, accusing me of horrible things,” Kate said.

Alice looked at Kate. “You really don’t remember, do you?”

“What did you say?” Kate asked, her blood chilled as she watched Alice put that smile on her face.

“Oh, nothing dear.”

Secrets have a very strange way of chipping away slowly at the soul bit by bit. Festering like an open wound. Kate knew that all too well. She wanted to be honest with her friends, to tell them the whole story and lean into their love and support. But, especially after reading the police file, she was afraid no one would believe her. Right now her memories of Lacie before she disappeared seemed as unreal as the ghost she must have dreamed up yesterday in her childhood bedroom.
