 Chapter Eight

Devin’s mind was jarred back to the present by the ringing of the phone.

“Hello?” Devin answered still thinking about the past and the new job he had been given.

“Hi Devin, its Lisa. I have a woman here in the office who says she met you on a plane from St. Louis. She would like to retain us to handle a disposition. I told her we are primarily a criminal law firm, but she insists that she wants us.”

“Okay Lisa. I know her. Make her comfortable, and I will be there in fifteen minutes. Prepare conference room two for me please, and make a fresh pot of coffee.” Devin said.

“Yes sir, I’m on it. Now, would you like her to wait in the reception area or in your office?”

“Leave her in the reception area. I’m in the garage now.”

“Yes sir, I’m on it now!” Lisa confirmed.

Devin disconnected the call and was unable to hide the smile that spread across his face. The deep dimple on his right cheek, the one that makes the ladies drip, was prominent now. He parked the Porsche in his reserved parking space near the elevator, grabbed his briefcase and entered the elevator. He punched number twenty seven and stood back looking out over the Atlanta skyline wondering what Portia had in mind as far as the disposition. He remembered her talking something about being in town for a merger or something. He was looking at her and her assets, instead of being focused on the conversation. Devin had already decided he was going to help her. He wanted a reason to see her again, and the opportunity presented itself. He checked himself in the mirrored glass before stepping off the elevator.

The offices of Kross and Schwinn were located in the Colony Square building in mid-town Atlanta. The twenty seventh floor offered a sweeping view of Atlanta on three sides. On a clear day, you could see Stone Mountain from the offices. From the other angles, you could see Cumberland Mall and Six Flags over Georgia Amusement Park. The offices were plush and masculine with earth tones and neutral colors. Devin walked into the office and froze in place with his hand on the door knob. Portia was standing, facing away from him, looking at some artwork on the far wall. She looked even more beautiful today than she did on the plane. Her hair was down, and it reached the middle of her back. She wore a tan sundress and wedged sandals which threw Devin off because she came for a meeting, and he knew she was very professional.

“Hi Mr. Kross.” Beamed a beautiful Portia with a bright smile that Devin hadn’t seen in a while. “I bet you didn’t expect to see me again, huh, and certainly not this soon?” Portia asked with a smile.

“Hi Portia.” Devin spoke as he crossed the room.

He reached out to shake her hand, but Portia opened her arms wide and hugged Devin, sending shock waves from his head to his toes.
