“Guys, he’s dead,” Joshua pronounced.

“What do you mean he’s dead?” Meagan asked as she fell to her knees. “No, he can’t be!”

“How?” asked Katie. “Does this mean it wasn’t Shawn who was responsible for everything that has happened?”

“Meagan! Meagan,” John tried to get the attention of the dazed, unresponsive Meagan. “Did Shawn have anyone else here?”

In the distance and with increasing speed and power, the witch swooped in, knocking everyone to the side. She mounted Shawn’s body and sucked his soul into her. When she finished, she looked at Katie. “You! I know you.” Then she disappeared in to the darkness.

“What the hell was that?” Shane wanted to know.

“I think it was her,” Katie answered.

Meagan asked, “Her who?”

“Katie, why did that, that thing look and respond directly to you?” John asked. “What does she mean she knows you?”

Joshua suggested, “We can talk about that later. Let’s get out of here. There’s a cabin. Let’s go inside; it’s probably safer there than standing here.”

After they ran into the cabin, Shane brought up the witch again. “Okay, Mom, do you know what that was?”

“Only from my dreams. I saw many things—slaves, torment, and her, a witch. A voodoo witch who feeds off souls with help from a vengeful killer. But I thought it was just dreams, sleep paralysis. It all happened here back in the late 1800s. There was a slave named Kooshma, who exchanged his soul for revenge against the Wilcox bloodline and everyone who took part in his family’s massacre. But it’s different now. My dreams have shown the bones of an infant, Kooshma’s child. Look, everyone, we will die unless we find the bones of Kooshma’s child. That is what drives him. And without the bones, there’s no control, and he’s free to kill whomever he wants to at will. We have to find all the bones and bring them together for him to be contained.”

“What about that witch?” Meagan asked Katie. “What about that witch?”

“She has no real power without souls, and Kooshma gives them to her for immortality. So it only seems logical that the witch must have the bones. We must find a way to draw her out and hope she consumed enough souls to start becoming flesh herself. At that point, we should be able to kill her. Who controls Kooshma controls the witch. Since Kooshma’s killing, she has started getting stronger. But maintaining her youth is her real desire, and the more souls she consumes, the more human her body becomes. Then and only then can we can make our move on her.”

“So Miss Maye?” asked Joshua.

“Miss Maye is the witch. She has been waiting all these years, waiting here for us, waiting for the Wilcox blood to walk upon this desecrated land. And now, with us here and the bones, she controls him again.”

“Well, what are we waiting for?” asked Joshua. “We need to find those bones.”

Shane asked, “Where do we even start, Mom?”

“This is Miss Maye’s cabin. Tear this place apart, and start searching.
