Chapter Thirteen

Before Bowen could even express that he was in pain, his brother swept Briar out of his arms and laid her on his shoulder. He gave Bowen a withering stare. “When you need help, ask for it.”

“I’m the nanny,” Bowen argued weakly, leaning heavily on his cane.

Adele rolled his eyes. “Not tonight, you’re not. Tonight, we’re the fun uncles.” He rocked Briar gently, the way Bowen had seen him do with his own son more than a decade ago. He remembered the petrified look on Adele’s face—like he was terrified he was going to drop Gage or hurt him.

But fatherhood had grown on him in ways Bowen had never expected to see. And he couldn’t help but wonder if he’d see it again. Adele was still young, and now that Gage was older, he had room in his life for someone else.

“Stop staring at me like I’m some puppy you found in an alley,” Adele bitched.

Bowen rolled his eyes as he followed his brother up the driveway. “I don’t think you’re nearly that cute.” He started to say something else, but Adele’s phone began to buzz.

“Fuck,” his brother said, staring at the screen.

“Give her to me.” Gage swept in and took Briar, who was like a limp rag doll. “Her bed’s set up, right?”

Bowen waved his hand at the door. “In the office.” He watched Gage take off and his brother walk around toward the backyard, which meant the phone call was probably from Kash, Adele’s oldest and best friend.

Kash and Adele had raised Bowen through his tween years, and for a long while, Bowen assumed they were going to get married until Adele brought home a woman with a ring on her finger. It had shattered his perception of the world when he realized not everyone liked boys the way he did.

Closing his eyes, he leaned against the porch railing, using one hand to remove his leg. The relief was palpable, and his stump felt like it was swelling a bit from how long he’d been in it that day. He flexed his muscles and tried to focus on the ache instead of what Lane was doing right now.

Because it was probably getting laid. He probably had a gorgeous woman all spread out in his bed. Was she gasping? Calling his name? Was she clawing at his back as he told her how good she was?

Fuck.

His dick plumped in his jeans, and he willed himself not to go there.

It wasn’t fair to either of them.

He glanced over at Lane’s house and saw his car in the driveway, but it was alone. Had he driven her? This was supposed to be a hookup, but what if it became more? What if—

The front door opened, and Bowen flung himself back into the shadows as he watched Lane step out onto his own porch. In the dim streetlights, Bowen could see sadness on his face. He rested his shoulder against the stucco and closed his eyes.

He was hurting.

Bowen’s heart twisted in his chest, and he couldn’t take it.
