Chapter 9
The next morning there was a knock on my bedroom door.
âIrish,â I hollered out. Iâd been dreaming of him all night. I told him I didnât work Sunday mornings. The fact he came over anyway had me bouncing out of my bed. Unlocking my door, I opened it quick.
A woman screeched, her breath hitting my face. âIrish? You expecting him?â
I felt my clothes, wondering if I was even dressed enough for a stranger. Okay, I had on a long t-shirt. Touching my hair, I yelled for Jassica.
âNo oneâs here, and your front doorâs wide open. Bless your heart.â
âWho are you?â
âCharlotte Jones. I remember you from high school. The orphan who landed Ron Cline. Too bad things went south in nursing school when you got that disease. Remember me?â
âNo. I donât remember you,â I said just to get under her skin. âWaldo,â I called for my dog. âWhat do you want?â I asked her.
âI need to know whatâs going on with you and Irish.â
I felt Waldoâs curly fur rub my leg. Reaching down, I took the handle of his harness. âLiving room,â I told him. I didnât need him to take me, but he could. Honestly, I didnât feel safe anymore and the dog made me feel safer.
Charlotte followed us to the living room where I sat on the couch. I didnât let go of Waldo. âNow, what was it again so important you had to break into my house?â
âBreak in?â She bellowed. âI did knock. I came here to ask you to your face what you have going on with Irish.â I could tell from the direction of her voice she stood over me, a little too close for comfort.
âOkay?â I wasnât about to tell her that nothing was going on between us.
âSo, whatâs going on? I canât get a hold of him. He hasnât texted me back since I caught him with you.â
âAnd how is this my problem?â
âListen, bitch. Itâll be your problem.â
Standing up, I said, âItâs time for you to leave.â
âIâd like to see you make me.â
âWaldo,â I started.
Charlotte backed away in so much of a hurry she created her own breeze. âWhat the hell do you plan to do, sic him on me?â
âI asked you to leave. If you donât, my guard dog here is trained to eat your face off.â I was half scared and half trying not to smile.
âYouâre not serious?â Her voice gave away that she wasnât sure.
âYou want to find out. Waldo, front door.â We started walking toward her. Once we reached the front door, I shut and locked the knob, the bolt and the chain. I had Waldo take me to the back door where I did the same.
When Jassica got back, I was waiting for her. âWhere the fuck have you been?â
âYou know Iâm only over at your brotherâs place if you need me. You said you didnât mind.â
âOnce. I said it once. I didnât mean shack up with him and leave me to fend for myself.â
âSorry,â Jassica said in the sad tone she always used now.
