HARLOW
Sunday morning, I wake up with a smile on my face. Today is going to be fun.
While taking a shower, it occurs to me â not for the first time â how lucky I am. Most people would hate having to go into work on a Sunday. Here I am, looking forward to my arrival at the arena. The team is holding an event where kids interested in playing hockey get a chance to skate with the players. Itâll be a chance to observe them when they arenât playing, and I like the idea of seeing how they interact with the kids, too. I feel like an explorer soaking in all the information I can. Thereâs something so exciting about it.
Of course, Ruby had her own take on the situation when I chatted with her last night. âYou can always tell by the way a guy treats kids if heâs worth your time.â
âIâm not looking to date any of these guys,â I reminded her.
âSure, sure. It would be the worst thing in the world if you started dating one of them.â
âThatâs exactly what it would be,â I muttered.
âJust think how romantic that is, though. You met at work. It was a forbidden romance.â Her voice got soft and breathy. âYour passion could only be denied for so long until⦠untilâ¦â
âYou seriously need a hormone balance, because right now theyâre rotting your brain.â
But Iâm also a big old hypocrite, because thatâs exactly what was on my mind even if I couldnât admit it. Maybe not at the forefront, but definitely dancing around in the back.
Letâs face it. There arenât many things in this world more attractive than a man who knows how to handle himself around kids. Not that itâs a red flag if heâs awkward â it might be a matter of never spending a lot of time with them before. But if a man is against the idea right off the bat, letâs just say itâs not a good sign. At least, not for me.
Since itâs not strictly a workday, I can dress down a little bit, choosing a pair of jeans and a T-shirt with the teamâs logo printed on the front. With my hair back in a ponytail and a pair of sneakers on my feet, Iâm whistling when I head out the door with a travel cup of fresh-squeezed orange juice from one of the trees in my backyard. Todayâs going to be a good day. I can feel it. Any excuse to observe the players and see how they interact together when theyâre not in the middle of a game can only help me figure out how to help them.
The parking lot is fuller than Iâve ever seen it when I arrive with fifteen minutes to go before the event is even supposed to start. On my way to the employee parking area, I notice a pair of what look to be twin boys practically tumbling out of an SUV and racing each other to the doors.
