This poem does not refer to anyone in particular, but again shows Kiplingâs empathy with the courage and endurance of everyone under arms, even those fighting against the British.
Piet
(Regular of the Line)
I do not love my Empireâs foes,
Nor call âem angels; still,
What is the sense of âatinâ those
âOom you are paid to kill?
So, barrinâ all that foreign lot
Which only joined for spite,
Myself, Iâd just as soon as not
Respect the man I fight.
Ah there, Piet! â âis trousies to âis knees,
âIs coat-tails lyinâ level in the bullet-sprinkled breeze;
âE does not lose âis rifle anâ âe does not lose âis seat,
Iâve known a lot oâ people ride a damâ sight worse than Piet.
Iâve âeard âim cryinâ from the ground
Like Abelâs blood of old,
Anâ skirmished out to look, anâ found
The beggar nearly cold.
Iâve waited on till âe was dead
(Which couldnât âelp âim much),
But many grateful things âeâs said
To me for doinâ such.
Ah there, Piet! whose time âas come to die,
âIs carcase past rebellion, but âis eyes inquirinâ why.
Though dressed in stolen uniform with badge oâ rank complete,
Iâve known a lot oâ fellers go a damâ sight worse than Piet.
Anâ when there wasnât aught to do
But camp and cattle-guards,
Iâve fought with âim the âole day through
At fifteen âundred yards;
Long afternoons oâ lyinâ still,
Anâ âearinâ as you lay
The bullets swish from âill to âill
Like scythes among the âay.
Ah there, Piet! â beâind âis stony kop.
With âis Boer bread anâ biltong, anâ âis flask of awful Dop;
âIs Mauser for amusement anâ âis pony for retreat,
Iâve known a lot oâ fellers shoot a damâ sight worse than Piet.
Heâs shoved âis rifle âneath my nose
Before Iâd time to think,
Anâ borrowed all my Sunday cloâes
Anâ sent me âome in pink.
