Feeling the heat and brightness of the sun behind his eyes, Matt cautiously lifted one eyelid then another. He slammed them closed against the agony that sliced into his head with just that one small contact.
Inside his skull, a thousand hammers were pounding, slamming against his brain like waves against the hull in an angry sea. He tried to wet his lips but his mouth was so dry he couldn’t swallow. He shifted a little, moving out of the direct morning sunlight, and once more opened his eyes, but his eyelids felt gritty, and the pain in his head seemed to swell. His tongue felt thick and furry, and his stomach roiled, threatening to erupt.
For several long moments he lay back on his pillow, willing the pounding to cease. Damn blue ruin. Now he understood how the beastly stuff had gotten its name. Emitting a tight, pain-filled hiss, he stared up at the ceiling and for the first time realized he didn’t know where he was. Not onboard his ship, that was for certain, since the only rolling motion was in his stomach. Not at the Belmore town house, which had lovely molded ceilings in every room.
He shifted again, barely turning his head, and felt an answering movement beside him. When smooth warm skin touched his leg beneath the covers, he bolted upright, then groaned at the pain that shot into his head.
Turning toward the lump beneath the sheets, he focused on the long, golden hair spilling over the pillow next to his. He couldn’t see her face, yet relief of a sort trickled through him. The little blond whore at the Cock and Hen. At least now he knew where he was.
The woman made a sweetly feminine sound and rolled over just then, dragging down the sheet and baring one of her breasts. It was pale and well-formed, jutting deliciously upward, the nipple a soft dusky rose. As bad as he felt, he grew hard beneath the covers and recalled the sailor’s adage that a proven cure for a night of abuse was to take his ease on a woman, drain the poison from his system, seamen said. The tempting little whore would serve well enough for that, as he was certain she must have last night.
He eased her toward him, shoving the hair back out of her face and baring a second lovely breast, which he cupped and began to stroke—and froze.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! The luscious little blonde wasn’t the whore at the Cock and Hen. The woman was none other than Jessie Fox!
She opened her eyes and blinked, saw him staring at her with unabashed horror, saw that her breasts were exposed, gasped, and jerked the sheet up to her chin.
A rosy flush burned into her cheeks. “Well,” she said, nervously wetting her lips. “At least you are finally awake. You’ve been sleeping since yesterday afternoon.”
He couldn’t think of a single thing to say. Good God, what the hell was she doing here? He raked an unsteady hand though his sleep-tousled hair and almost wished he had another drink.
