â Raelle, did you hear me?â Sloan asked, snapping me out of my memories of my dream from the night before. Dream or nightmare. It could â ve been both.
We â d volunteered to muck out the horse stalls while the servants assisted Bree with a weapons inventory. I hadn â t built up the nerve to ask anyone about Calak yet.
Last night, Veras escorted me to my bedchamber. He offered for me to dine privately with him, but I declined, choosing instead to have my dinner sent up. The truth of it was that I didn â t know what to say to him, or any of them.
Two of the King â s guards stood watch outside of my room, as the Unit was otherwise engaged. It was a long, quiet night that I spent either staring out my window or cuddled by the fire. Just me, alone with my thoughts. I didn â t feel qualified for what was facing me.
How could anyone be at just nineteen years old? No one had ever taught me what to do when your entire family conceals something from you, or how to act while pretending to be engaged to a man who you are developing feelings for, or how to feel when people are actively trying to take your life. I had been assaulted, betrayed, kidnapped, and kissed all in the past week.
Gods, had it only been a week?
I needed to reconcile the losses I was feeling. With Kolt â s revelation yesterday, I felt the loss of my home. In time, I may have been able to forgive them, but the West no longer felt like my safe harbor. I deeply loved my family and I would see them again one day. For now, I needed time. The opportunity that Nichelle had offered me to regain the memory of who I was and where I came from was alluring. But that information could prove to be revolutionary or destructive, depending on what the past held for me.
The shame of what Zane had done in the training room did not hold weight, like I thought it would. I had accepted that it was not my fault, and there was nothing I could have done differently. That day resulted from madness and greed, likely the growing influence of Kellar. Although, did I really believe that the gods had banished one of their own, only to let him be released because two people died?
After a calming bath, I wrapped myself in the fur-lined blankets on my bed and waited for sleep to take me. Laying there, I kept seeing Calak â s eyes looking at me. My feelings towards him were complicated, but I knew I had missed him while he was gone those two days. Now I was more confused than ever. Had he hated me this entire time? Was he working with Leon? That was the most unbelievable scenario.
The way he looked at me though. I felt my soul tear. Whatever drew me to Calak was still there.
