Chapter 17

King

Ipoured my heart out to her and told her things I’ve never told anyone. I’ve kept those secrets, taken the wrath of everyone in town, and still kept my fucking head held high. She’s messing it up. She’s ruining it, and I have no way to stop it. I want to show her she isn’t broken, that I see the good in her, but how can I? A part of me still hates her, and a part of me probably always will, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting her just as much. My heart beats faster when she’s close to me. My mind goes wild, and I can’t think straight.

“I need to go.”

“Lilly, don’t do this.”

“Do what, King? Walk away from you? How can I fucking look at you right now? How can you look at me?” she yells.

“Because I know what I’m looking at, Lilly. Come on.”

“Come on, what? What do you want from me?” Lilly asks, throwing her arms out to her sides.

“I want a chance,” I admit.

“A chance for what?”

“To make things right, damn it, Lilly. Let me fix this,” I plead with her. I need her to let me try. There’s something deep inside of me that craves that from her. I’m not typically one to beg like this. I usually take what I want and move on, but this girl drives me crazy. She makes me feel insane.

“You can’t fix this, King. There’s nothing to fix.” Lilly turns on her heel and walks away from me. This isn’t how I pictured the day going, and I sure as hell didn’t picture her breaking down on me. This whole thing is a complete mess.

Once I get back to the car, I climb in and head for home and the liquor cabinet. Then I call Ryker to see if he showed up at school today or if he’s home and wants to hang out. I’ll keep the party outside, as I don’t like people in my space.

When he shows up, I debate letting him in. I had her here. I shouldn’t have let her go, but I did.

“What’s with you?” Ryker asks, taking a long pull from the liquor bottle in his hand before passing it to me. I do the same, downing part of the bottle before passing it back.

“What if I told you I had a thing for Lilly?”

“A thing for Lilly?”

“Yeah.”

“Then I’d say you lost your mind. Brent wouldn’t let that slide.”

“Brent abuses her,” I spit out before pulling a pack of cigarettes from my pocket, taking one out, and lighting it up.

“You don’t know that,” he says, taking one for himself.

“I do know that. Do you think she was lying? You saw the way he was with her at the house.”

“Yeah, I saw it, but I don’t think he means anything by it. He isn’t going to let you two be together if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“I’m not asking him. I’m asking your thoughts on it,” I tell him.

“I thought you hated her?” Do I hate her? To a point, yes.
