Saul stared at his brand new cell phone, wondering how the fuck the thing worked. He’d waved away Kin’s offer to teach him how to use it the day before, but he obviously should have agreed. He hadn’t even managed to unlock the damn thing yet.

“You know, you’d have more results if you at least tried,” Zach pointed out as he put a plate full of eggs, bacon, and potatoes in front of Saul.

“I did. It doesn’t work.”

Zach rolled his eyes and grabbed the phone. “Did Kin help you at all with this?”

“No.”

Zach arched a brow. “Because you told him not to?”

Saul shrugged and took his fork. “Maybe.”

Zach chuckled. “I can help you if you want, but you should probably ask Kin.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s your mate.”

Saul rolled his eyes. That seemed to be the answer to everything. “What does that even mean? He can help me better because he’s my mate? Does it give him some kind of superpower or something?”

Zach sat in the chair next to Saul’s with his own plate in front of him. “Nope. Like I said, I could help you, but you should spend some time with Kin, try to get to know him. I know he wants to.”

“And how do you know that?”

“I’m a shifter. I’ve known I was Kameron’s mate since I was a teenager, but I had to stay away from him. My parents forced me to take a suppressant that would hide my scent so Kameron wouldn’t find out. I had to stay away from him for years, and let me tell you, it hurt like a bitch.”

Saul put his fork down. “But why?”

“Because our old alpha was an asshole. He didn’t want same-sex couples in the pack, or even shifter-human ones. He killed and shunned a lot of people for that, and terrorized the rest of us. I wanted Kameron, but I knew we’d both be in danger if I let him find out I was his mate.”

Saul was curious to find out more about it. What had happened to the old alpha? How had Kameron become the alpha in the man’s place?

He could tell Zach didn’t like talking about it, though, so he focused on eating his breakfast instead.

His phone vibrated on the table, and he just had the time to see Penny’s name on the display before it went dark again. He poked at the screen in the hope he’d be able to get the message to show again, but nothing happened, and he groaned.

Zach laughed. “Give me that.” Saul pushed the phone toward Zach. Zach took it and held it up, pressing something and tsking. “Kin didn’t even password it. How could you not make it work?”

“Uh, how about I haven’t owned a cell phone in more than ten years? Technology isn’t what it used to be.”

“Right. Your sister is saying hi and that your parents called her looking for you.” Zach frowned when the phone vibrated in his hand. “Looks like they’re making noise about you not being in the hospital anymore.
