Darcy waits outside Judy's house. Itâs 5:30 p.m., a half hour past closing time at Fernwick and Barnes. The clouds are thick enough for the streetlights to flicker on. As she sits behind the wheel of the rental car, a vehicle speeds around the corner and stops in the driveway. Judy steps out of the car and looks around cautiously before heading inside.
Sheâs instantly struck by the sight of the woman. Judy looks like she could be Constanceâs younger sister. Or Darcyâs.
The junior firm member glimpses Darcy and hurries toward the steps.
âItâs okay. Constance Monet gave me your name.â
Judy relaxes slightly as she recognizes Darcyâs face. âWhat are you doing here? It's late.â
âI want to talk to you about the harassment at the office.â
âYouâre one of the police officers who visited the firm yesterday. I donât want trouble.â
Darcy takes a step closer, her eyes flickering over the house. âI think I know who is behind these threats you're receiving.â
Judy tenses again, her eyes narrowing as she steps back into the safety of her doorway. "Stan and Osmond? Do you know them?"
âNo, but Iâm aware of the phone calls. Constance tells me youâre receiving them too.â
Judy's face pales as she runs her fingers through her hair.
âI've been receiving strange phone calls for about a week.â
Darcyâs gaze shifts to the second-floor windows. âYou should take self-defense classes. You and Constance both.â
Judy eyes Darcy warily. âI donât know; isnât that an overreaction? Osmond threatened to ruin my career, but heâs a child. He wouldnât attack me.â
âHe was happy to sleep with your friend against her will. The classes are a great way to protect yourself and gain confidence.â
Judy softens to the idea but isnât convinced. âIâll think it over.â
âI hope you do. Self-defense classes helped me survive a traumatic period in my life. Letâs talk about these phone calls. Tell me about them.â
âI donât know how to explain the calls. Theyâre just weird. The caller says nothing but nonsense, but the sexual innuendo is clear.
âWe need to report the calls,â Darcy says gently. âAre they arriving on your cell?â
âAnd on my office phone.â
âHe calls you there too?â If the two firm members are behind the pranks, theyâre taking a tremendous risk by placing the calls from inside the office. âWhat does he say?â
âI really donât want to go into it. Heâs looking for sex, but itâs so juvenile. I donât know if heâs trying to scare me or just being an idiot. Itâs like he watches too many horror movies.â
âIâll need your cell number.â
âCan you trace the calls?â Judy asks.
âI can try.â
Sheâd already given the phone Parham found to Chief Davila. Now she wants to see that phone again. Did the creep call Judy from the same burner?
âJudy,â Darcy says, âhave you ever met Jason McCaffrey?â
Judyâs mouth falls open. âThe guy the police arrested?â
âThatâs right.â
âNo, Iâve never met him, thank goodness. He hit on Constance once. Did she tell you?â
âYes.â
âSomething weird occurred regarding McCaffrey.â
Darcy narrows her eyes. âTell me everything.â
âA few nights ago, I awoke in the middle of the night and found a potted plant smashed on the porch.
