Chapter Nine

THE MOANING COWBOY was carried back into the saloon, where Jubal bandaged his broken foot as best he could. He doubted that the man would ever walk straight again and wondered if, when he sobered up enough to remember the fight, he would be another name added to the list of enemies Jubal had to watch for. He hoped not: he had enough already determined, one way or another, to pay off violent debts.

He left John knocking back whiskey to kill the pain and walked out alongside McDonald.

‘You handled that pretty good,’ the Texan remarked, ‘but if I hadn’t turned up you coulda got a bullet in you. Luke was hellbent on killin’ you. You needed a gun.’

Jubal thought for a moment before answering. He had never used a handgun, apart from the little .41 caliber Remington under-and-over which he had lost some time back. He was a good shot with the Spencer rifle he habitually carried but had never had occasion to test his skill with any other kind of weapon.

‘Alright, Bill,’ he replied, ‘point taken. So what do you suggest?’

‘Get yoreself a carryin’ gun. The kind you can keep with you. That way you’ll most likely stay alive a deal longer.’

‘I guess you’re the expert,’ Jubal smiled, ‘so how about advising me?’

‘Well,’ it was McDonald’s turn to pause for a moment. ‘There’s plenty of guns a man can buy, the stores are full of ’em. Real fancy pieces some are.’ He was clearly on to a subject he relished. ‘There’s little guns like the gambler carried, Derringers an’ the like, an’ there’s good imported items, from England and Germany mostly. But if you want somethin’ that’s gonna stop a man without it mattering too much where you hit him then I’d say a Colt would be yore best bet.’

Jubal remembered Luke’s body arcing through the air under the impact of the slug from McDonald’s gun. A side weapon would, he decided, be useful. He could hardly carry the Spencer with him all the time and another Remington would be useful chiefly in close-up action only, so the kind of man-killing weapon the Texan was recommending might be a good idea.

He nodded his assent. ‘Alright, Bill, you’ve sold me on the idea. Tomorrow you can pick me a Colt.’

McDonald agreed readily to acting as weapons advisor to Laredo’s new doctor and they turned into the Ranger Station discussing the relative merits of the various handguns available in Texas.

The following morning McDonald greeted Jubal with his customary enthusiasm and insisted that even before Jubal see his newly-furnished office they should walk to the gunsmith’s to examine the wares. It would not, he advised Jubal, be a good idea to buy the standard .45 caliber Colt generally known as the Peacemaker. He was a great believer in the merits of the longer-barreled Cavalry Colt: it took the same shells which were readily available all over the West and the extra inches on its muzzle gave it a much greater accuracy over the Peacemaker.
