Stich drove out of Cambridge. He knew Berry had been caught off guard, and that he was hiding something. He didn’t know what exactly but it felt good to be taking the initiative and asking the questions. A lot better than the other way around at least.

Ten minutes out of the town and Susan’s mobile rang. It was Vicky again.

‘Stich, how are you?’

‘Fine. I talked to Berry. He’s sending me a report he made on the samples Susan sent over to him. Where are you?’

Vicky spoke quickly. ‘In a cafe. I’m using their WiFi.’

‘You sound excited,’ said Stich.

‘I am,’ she replied. ‘I’ve got good news. I’ve spoken to a policeman called Willis about you.’

‘Willis the detective who interviewed me at the hospital.’

‘Yes,’ she said. ‘First up, you’re not in the frame for Susan’s murder.’

‘I’m not?’

‘No.’

‘What’s happened?’

‘They’ve made progress. Found something at Maxi’s house that led them to someone else. They’re holding him as we speak.’

‘Hold it, Vick.’ Stich pulled into a layby and parked behind an articulated lorry that had a sticker asking, ‘How am I driving?’ and a phone number underneath.

‘Who are they holding?’ asked Stich.

‘I’m not sure. But I have other sources. I think I can safely say you’re out of the woods.’

‘Did Willis want to know where I was?’

‘Yeah, but I didn’t tell him.’

‘Didn’t he insist?’

‘Not really.’

‘How did you get hold of him in the first place?’ asked Stich.

There was a pause. ‘I didn’t,’ she said. ‘Someone got him for me.’

‘Someone like who?’

‘I can’t say,’ she said.

‘Can’t say?’

Vicky said nothing.

‘Vicky, what’s going on?’

‘Nothing.’

‘Where are you now?’

‘In a cafe.’

‘With Willis?’

‘No,’ she said, ‘on my own.’

‘Who got hold of Willis then?’

There was silence.

‘Vicky?’

‘I’m still here,’ she said.

‘What’s going on?’

‘I had an e-mail,’ she said.

‘Who from?’

‘Does the name, Laurence Tench, ring any bells?’

‘Of course it does.’

‘Well, I got one from him.’

‘You know Laurence Tench?’ Stich asked.

‘Yes.’

‘How did he know you’re involved? No one knows you’re involved.’

She sighed. ‘Just trust me on this will you?’ Laurence knows what you’ve been through. He wants to help you.’

‘Laurence? You on first name terms with him?’

‘Yes,’ she said.

There was more silence.

‘Why does he want to help me?’

‘He’s concerned, Stich. An employee’s family caught up in a tragic situation. He has a lot of power, a lot of influence.’

‘I’m sure he does,’ said Stich.

‘Seems they are holding an ex-Immteck staff member and will probably charge him as well,’ Vicky said.

‘For Susan’s shooting?’

‘That and the murder of Clive.’

‘The same bloke you ran over in the car park?’

‘Must be.’

‘So he survived?’

‘Apparently. Look, Stich, I’ve told you too much already. It was stupid of me to give you all this over the phone. Come back to the hotel and Laurence will fill you in on what he knows.’

‘The killer,’ Stich said, ‘does he have a name?’

‘Not yet he doesn’t. They won’t release that for a day or so.’

‘Is he insane?’

‘Probably. Laurence says he knows who it is and why he did it.’

‘He knows why?’

‘Yes.’

‘Tell me.’

‘I don’t know why. Laurence does.’

‘Has he told the police what he knows?’

‘He’s just had a session with a man called Varcy.
