Kiera yawned and stretched. Her shadow stretched too, projected onto the wall by the morning sunshine. Shivering slightly in the cold room, she grabbed Brennan’s jacket off the end of her bed and put it on. Pawing the wild mess that was her hair into a loose braid, she entered the loft. Only a few children still slept in the long row, and one of them stirred sleepily and opened his eyes to smile.

“Hey, Fin,” she said, recognizing Ian and Rachel’s youngest son. “Are you ready to get up?”

He reached out to put his arms around her neck, and she lifted him up. Soon enough his older brother and sisters would be awake, but for now he was her buddy. It was quiet downstairs, but Ian and Rachel moved around the kitchen talking in low tones.

“Good morning, Kiera,” Rachel said, pulling her into a hug when she noticed her.

“Good morning. Are Jordan and Niyanna still here?”

“They left a few hours ago so he could get home in time for work,” Ian explained, taking the heavy toddler from her.

“Makes sense. Dad and Mom?”

“They’re still sleeping. I think your prayer really helped them, Kiera, especially Mom. She was much more peaceful afterward and went to bed just a few hours later, although I don’t think they’ll be getting up anytime soon,” Rachel said.

“We’ve decided to spend the day here to support them and let the kids rest a little more, though I see Mr. Early Bird here was excited for the morning.” Ian tickled Finley, who giggled as Rachel joined in the game.

Kiera smiled at the sweet display of family affection. Loneliness washed over her like a flood. She missed Jade. She needed Brennan.

“I should be getting home soon, if you think that’s okay. When Mom gets up, will you tell her I love her and to call me anytime?”

They answered by pulling her into a hug along with Finley, and the tears she had conquered the night before returned.

“It’s okay, dear, and we’ll deliver your message,” Rachel said.

She pulled away and wiped her eyes with the napkin Ian handed her. “Okay, I’ll call Brennan.”

Kiera sat on the floor with her legs stretched out in front of her and set the device on her lap. Being home was second nature to her, and she slipped back easily into old habits. She sent the request for a call and smoothed her loose braid.

“Hey, Brennan.”

“How are you doing?” His voice was tired.

“I’m okay. Prayer last night really helped me find peace in the Lord, but it’s like every little thing reminds me of what’s happened. It’s gonna be a hard couple of weeks coming up.”

“Mmm. Yeah, we’ll have to continue praying, won’t we?” She knew without a doubt that the pause that came after was him running his fingers through his hair. “You ready to come home?”

“Yeah. I hope this doesn’t make you late for work.”

“No, it’s okay. I took the day off anyway, since I can barely focus. See you in a few.”

She stood up and tucked the device into her purse.
