Three days since I caught her outside the study window. Three days and she’s barely spoken to me. In that time I’ve arranged for her things to be brought here and made sure the world at large knows about the marriage.

The contract hasn’t officially been pulled but everyone knows that breaking the rules means death. I’ve been safe for three whole days.

Until today, when everything went wrong.

It was a mundane trip to one of our nightclubs. A meeting with Leone was arranged. Except it didn’t exactly go to plan.

It’s late when I walk back into the house, blood dripping into my eyes, blurring my vision. I wipe it away, surprised by how dizzy I feel.

My body has taken a hammering and all I want to do is sleep but I’m too angry. An ambush. I should have seen the warning signs. Too busy obsessing over her.

The doctor is waiting for me in the medical room. The space is filled with the latest equipment, all designed to keep me and my men alive. Fridges full of blood ready to use.

Dante is by my side as I walk in, telling the doc where to focus. I sink into the chair, grimacing in pain. “Back again,” Doc says. “One of these days I’m not going to be able to sew you back up.”

“Just get to work,” I snarl. “I’m bleeding out here.”

“Clothes off. I can’t sew through a ripped suit.”

Dante helps me get undressed. “Could have bought me dinner first,” he says as he undoes my shirt.

“Shut the fuck up.”

“Thought I was here to keep an eye on the baby,” Doc says. “Nice easy job, you said.”

“Get on with it.” I sink back into the chair wearing just my underwear, watching as the doc wipes my face, clearing away the worst of the blood. “What’s the damage?” I ask as he breathes in sharply.

“You look like you’ve been hit by a car. Contusions all over like a rainbow. Cut to ribbons. What the hell happened?”

“The damage?”

“Two bullet grazes. You got lucky there. That knife wound needs dealing with first. If I can’t stop that bleeding you’re in trouble.” He turns to Dante. “Fetch me some O neg out of the fridge.”

A figure appears in the doorway.

“I’m here to see the doctor,” Zoey says. “I’m struggling to sleep.” She looks shocked when she spots me. “What happened?” she asks, walking over, her eyes scanning down my body. I could be wrong but did they pause for a moment when she got to my boxer shorts? My cock twitches at the thought. “Who did this to you?”

“Keep still,” Doc says, putting stitches into the cut on my cheek. “No talking for a minute.”

Dante answers her for me. “He got jumped.
