This was the first night in a week I hadnât seen Oscar, and I found his absence made me edgy. The hockey team had left early in the morning for a five-hour road trip to play against the Wolves on their home turf. I hadnât followed hockey until I started hanging out with Oscar, but just a little research had left me scared for him. This team was known for playing dirty and more than once, opposing teams had been injured in fan riots after their team lost a game. Iâd made Oscar swear heâd be safe before he left and, from what Iâd seen of the game, heâd been true to his word. The temper Iâd seen barely contained in the last game was completely gone. The camera had even caught a closeup of him laughing with an opposing player. I glanced down at my phone where Iâd snapped a photo of the closeup, his head thrown back, mouthguard visible beneath his helmet. His eyes sparkled with the kind of mirth I was coming to expect from him. Despite his nickname, Oscar was intelligent and self-aware. He made people feel like they mattered and everything was right with the world as long as he was smiling. Catching the train of my thoughts, I dropped my phone on my bed as though it could burn me.
Violet was out studying again, and the silence of the room felt almost suffocating. It was my night to dance at Madame Cognacâs burlesque, but Iâd called and begged off. The idea of dancing while I felt so raw was not something I wanted anyone to see.
Maybe one person, a voice whispered in the back of my head. Shoving a cookie in my mouth to quiet it, I flopped back on my bed and retrieved my cell, my attention drawn back to Oscarâs smiling face.
Vibrations shook my hand a moment later and a glance at the top of my screen showed Oscar was requesting a video call. Despite wearing nothing but an old shirt, I accepted the call and laid back as his smiling face filled the screen.
âHey there, Balloon Girl. I wasnât sure if Iâd get you or not.â
âYeah, I took the night off. Had some unmissable TV to watch.â
He straightened against what looked like a wooden bedhead. âYou watched the game?â
I nodded, rolling to my stomach to give my arm a rest.
âI did, but considering how close you came to getting your throat cut by that skate, I almost wish I didnât.â
He chuckled, running a hand over his stubbled jaw and down his intact throat. It had been a terrifying moment. Heâd passed the puck off as he slid headfirst into the boards, while a Wolves player had barely stopped his skates in time. Oscarâs face had been covered in ice shavings when he found his feet, but heâd just taken a moment to remove his helmet and wipe his face, then got back to it like he hadnât almost died on national TV.
