It was dark outside when I changed into a pair of dark jeans and a black sweater, hoping I’d stay out of sight. I knew the risk I was taking by heading back into Holbeck alone, but I convinced myself it’d just be a quick stop with someone I knew, so it’d be safe. I tied my loose curls up into a high ponytail, grabbing the car key and Roller’s phone, ready to head out. I peeked down the stairs to make sure no one was around then I left right through the front door.

Roller was in the bathroom this time and I hoped that the sound of the shower would drown out the engine starting up, while I pulled out of the garage in Ranger’s truck. Once I was safely inside, I shut the door, taking a deep breath. All I had with me was my little notebook of questions, a pen slid onto the top cover, and a lot of hope that everything would go smoothly.

I drove down the long highway, taking every turn, finding my exit into Holbeck. From the time I re-entered the city, fear had absolutely consumed me. Everything I felt the night I nearly got shot came rushing back, reminding me of just how much danger I was in. This time was different. This time I didn’t have Keys or any of the Saints to rely on. It was just me and I had to be incredibly careful.

I pulled up in the lot outside the park, hopping out of the car, shutting the door behind me. The air felt cooler, much chillier than it usually was and I rubbed my arms to keep myself warm. I walked over to the little tree near the swing set where the kids would play during the day and the teenagers would sneak off to drink on the weekend nights. I looked around for Drew, but I couldn’t see him anywhere. I waited another minute before taking a walk around the tree, pulling out Roller’s cell phone to call him.

When I made it to the other side, I tripped on something, falling onto the dirt and grass. Something wet flowed on the ground and I fumbled around for Roller’s cell phone to shine the flashlight at it. I got it on, shining it over at the tree, and my eyes widened. I instantly felt the urge to vomit, staring at Drew’s lifeless body, covered in blood. It oozed from the bullet wound right between his eyes, and I noticed all of the bruises on his pale, yellowing skin.

“Oh, my God.” My heart started thumping loudly in my chest. I couldn’t stop staring at him, the emptiness in his eyes, the way his mouth hung open like the last thing he ever did was scream. I stood there completely frozen for a minute, until I heard the gunshot and the bullet that whizzed right past my ear, missing my head by a few inches.

I turned around, running towards the truck as the bullets kept flying through the air.
