Shown here is a photograph of J. D. Crowe and the New South, a group Crowe formed in 1974. From left to right are Jimmy Gaudreau, Mike Gregory, Bobby Slone, Keith Whitley, and J. D. Crowe. Whitley, who was from Sandy Hook, Kentucky, played with Crowe from 1981 to 1985. He later gained considerable fame as a country artist before his death in 1989 from alcohol poisoning. The Bluegrass Thoroughbreds, who are no longer performing, were a popular band of the 1970s based just outside of Lexington, Kentucky. The two musicians on the left are the husband-and-wife team of Marcie and James Malicote, the founders of the band. (Courtesy of Gene Thompson.)
