Chapter 4
“So how did it go?” Ryan asked her as she slid into his car. “Get them all hired?”
“So far,” she said. “There will be a handful who won’t show up and a few who will quit the first day or two because they will figure out we actually work. But after the opening rush I won’t need as many people anyway, so it evens out.”
“You’ve done this before,” he said.
“A few times, but it’s fun. The people from corporate will come in, next week and that’s always a good time, to see people I know.” She glanced over at him wondering if he would bring up the elephant in the car or if he was wanting her to do it.
“Where are we going?” she asked him.
“County fair, I want to go watch the tractor pull,” he said.
“The what?” Of course, she knew what a tractor pull was, but for some reason felt surprised he did.
“Tractor pull. You hook a tractor up to heavy stuff and it pulls it,” he said, patiently.
“Sounds fun,” she said. “Any chance I can get a corn dog or something first? I’m starving.”
“You can have anything the fair is offering,” he told her. Suddenly, all she wanted was a corn dog and a lemon shake up. She hadn’t had either for years.
Apparently, he wasn’t bringing up any elephants even when they walked by the elephant ear stand. So she didn’t either. But he bought her two corn dogs that were just as good as she remembered and a lemon shakeup that was better than she remembered. Looking around, she smiled at the people. There was the 4-H barn. “Do we have time to go look?” she asked him, pointing.
“Sure!” He grabbed her hand and they headed that way.
Kelly smiled, she loved the 4-H projects. When she was a kid, she’d always wanted to be in 4-H. One of her foster families had been deeply involved in it, always going to the fairs and bringing home ribbons, doing projects. She’d only been there a month, but in that time, 4-H had made a big impression on her. Anytime she’d gone to a fair, she always made a point of checking them out. She loved it all, but it always made her wistful. Maybe Sam would be in 4-H when he got older and she could help him out with things, who knew? She would come and see his chickens, or the bread he baked, or even the pictures he’d taken. She didn’t think Jessie would be one who went for cows or pigs, but they were fun to see, too. What would Jessie think of chickens in her backyard? Maybe it was a dream of hers? Stranger things had been known to happen.
They walked along eyeing the tables full of baked goods, bread and cookies, sparkling jars of canned vegetables and fruit, fresh ones in baskets, sewing, painting, photos. Hard to believe they were all done by kids. She wondered what it would have been like to grow up in a stable house where you learned life skills, instead of living in survival mode.
