TWELVE
Keisha rolled over in the large, plush King-size bed in the master bedroom of Lloydâs new condo and pulled the red, silk sheets up underneath her chin. She was comfortable, clean and should have been relaxed, but something didnât feel right. She looked around the dark room which was only illuminated by the dim lighting provided by the setting sun and thought about the story Lloyd had told her back at the hospital a few days back.
I donât know, but I do know that those niggas canât be trusted. I wanna protect ya, shawty.
But Trigga didnât seem like the one who couldnât be trusted. Lloyd, on the other hand, had lied for over a year straight about a lot of things like it wasnât nothing. The vibe that she was getting from him now seemed odd too. The first few days, he was trying his best to be a gangster Prince Charming. Opening doors, getting her clothesâ¦all the shit she would have loved for him to do when they were together but heâd never done. But his façade was fading and he was going back to the same old Lloyd sheâd always known.
Keisha watched him from the bedroom as he opened up three black duffle bags of work on the table in the living room. He was facing her, but his attention was on the product and money. She studied his face as he concentrated on what was in front of him. She watched as he sliced open one bag and took a whiff then his phone rang.
Keisha closed her eyes and pretended to be sleeping, but through the tiny slits in her eyes she saw him flick his eyes towards the bedroom where she lay before answering the phone. In a hushed tone, he answered it as he walked out of the front door. Laying back on the pillows, Keisha looked at the ceiling and thought back once again to what had happened days before.
After Lloyd had left out of the hospital room, Keisha made a mad dash down to Triggaâs room. In the back of her mind, the warning that Lloyd had given her was ringing, but the closer she got to room 714, the quieter the ringing became. The hall wasnât empty, but it was filled with nurses and doctors who seemed preoccupied with their own matters. No one was interested in the woman rushing down the hallway in a hospital gown, bruised face and an expression of desperation on her face.
As she turned the corner to where the sign told her Triggaâs room would be, she almost ran smack into the nurse who had been in her room earlier.
âOh my God! Iâm so sorry, maâam!â Keisha managed to get out though she was nearly out of breath.
âOh, itâs okay honey,â the woman said with a smile. She winked at her and then said with a knowing look on her face, âYou going to see your handsome friend down there, huh?â
Keisha swallowed hard and nodded her head.
