I glance at my phone and frown. Already 11:17 p.m. I hadnât meant to stay out this lateâor maybe I did. Iâm having a hard time figuring myself out these days. I want to see Vanessa and Pandora, and I donât.
I want to hold them, and my fingers itch to hurt them.
Itâs better that Iâm here, surveying my clubs, where I can safely take out my urges for violence.
I never used to think I was this violent. Slayerâs the one with the knife and blood kink, not me.
Of course, Slayerâs not the one who loses control easily either.
âIâm heading out,â I tell Marcus, the manager at Club Rubyâs. âGive Esmerelda an ice pack and some concealer. I donât think sheâs going to try to leave again.â
Marcus winces a bit but nods. âSure thing, boss. And, um⦠I heard that you got Champagne back?â
âYeah, but sheâs not fit for Rubyâs anymore. Weâll see how she does in a few months. If anyone asks, just tell them she retired for now.â Iâm sure sheâd be able to pull off pretending sheâs happy here, but Iâm pissed enough at her betrayal that I put her in one of the cheaper clubs, where she wonât be earning as much.
Sheâd begged very hard for leniency when sheâd seen the vids of her sister. Her tears should have pleased me, butâ¦
But I just keep thinking of Vanessa and Pandora.
Maybe Pandora will be awake when I get back, or sheâll wake up demanding Mamaâs milk. Damien says she wonât start sleeping through the night for months.
I say my farewells to the rest of the staff, give some of the better dancers one last tip for the night, then head out to my car. Iâd sent Pablo home already, because there was no point in keeping him here when I was just going from my car to the club and back again.
Damien would lecture me about that⦠and just this once, I guess heâd have been right.
Thereâs somebody leaning against my car, gun in hand.
My eyebrows shoot up in surprise. âYo. Fancy meeting you here.â
Itâs the baby RomanoâNilo. Heâs wearing a better fitting suit than the last time Iâd seen him, but heâs still baby-faced. The parking lot lighting might have made anyone else look threatening, but even dramatic shadows arenât helping him in that department.
Nilo scowls at me. âOpen the car and get in,â he says in a near growl.
I consider the best course of action. I actually donât have a gun on me, because itâs the middle of summer and thereâs just no good way to conceal a gun in a t-shirt. Sure, I could have a gun in my pocket, but dick jokes aside, I donât want to risk accidentally shooting myself because I sat down wrong.
âOkay,â I say amiably. âYouâre the boss.â
I click the key fob and unlock the doors, keeping my hands up as I walk toward the driver side. Nilo keeps the gun trained on me at all times.
Does he know there are cameras in this parking lot? My eyes flicker to the one by the back exit wall.
