Chapter Fifteen
Trevor strode into the kitchen, realizing he was the first one up. After making coffee, he poured a cup full and sat down on a barstool at the counter, enjoying the peacefulness of the morning.
He thought about what the day might bring, trying to plan ahead. Water ran above him, letting him know Tally was up. He recalled her pulled muscle, and grinned as he remembered something his dad used to make for her when she was sick.
He hauled out the toaster and popped in two pieces of bread. While it warmed, he dug around in the drawer where Tally kept her special baking supplies. He took out several jars of sprinkles and one that said edible glitter. When the toast popped up, he coated it with chocolate-nut spread then smothered the bread with sprinkles and glitter.
Proud of his efforts, he located a china plate and set the toast on it, then filled a delicate china cup with hot chocolate. He’d just set the plate and cup on a tray when Tally bounded into the kitchen.
Joy radiated from her smile while her eyes sparkled with happiness. She pecked his cheek and gave him a tight hug. He sucked in a breath, wondering when she’d turned from his awkward little sister into such a beautiful woman.
He didn’t know exactly what was different about her this morning, but she seemed full of more life and energy than he’d ever seen in her. And that bothered him. Greatly.
The reason for the change in her no doubt started and ended with Gage.
Trevor swallowed back a primitive growl and forced a smile as Tally spied his efforts at making her breakfast.
“Princess toast?” She looked at the tray then at him. “I haven’t had that in years. Thank you, Trev.” She lifted the cup of steaming hot chocolate and took a sip. “Mmm. So good. Just like Dad always made it.”
“Yep. Nothing is too good for my favorite sister.”
One eyebrow rose as she stared at him over the rim of the cup. “I’m your only sister, unless Lulu has another child hidden away I don’t know about.”
“Bite your tongue! I wouldn’t wish Lulu on anyone,” Trevor said, placing an arm around Tally and giving her a hug.
She set the cup back on the tray and looked from the toast to Trevor. He tried to keep his face impassive, but she shook her head then crossed her arms over her chest and leaned back against the counter.
“What’s going on? You’re being awfully nice to me, and Dad only made princess toast when I was sick or disaster had struck.” Tally’s eyes widened. “Nothing happened to Aunt Marv, did it? Please tell me she’s…”
“Ready for breakfast,” Marvella said as she marched into the kitchen, rubbing her hands on the arms of her chunky sweater to ward off the cold. “This cold air makes me hungry. Are we having toast?” she asked, pointing to the toaster on the counter. “I can make eggs to go with it.”
“That’s fine,
