“We need to spread out!” OIG Director George Lehman roared. His arms moved wildly about his body. “We have to find this SOB, and we have to find him now!”

“How?” someone dared ask. “The fog is getting thicker. I can hardly see you, sir, and you’re only ten feet away.”

“Then you’d damn well better part the fog and walk through it!” his superior snapped. “This man has made a mockery of the TDCJ, and I. Will. Not. Stand. For it. Do you understand me?”

Mason understood that an innocent man was dead, and all the pompous director worried about was how this damaged his reputation. Mason shook his head in disgust, knowing the fog hid his reaction. He couldn’t even pretend respect for this man.

Gil sidled up to him. “This man is a real piece of work,” he muttered.

“He’s a piece of something, all right,” Mason agreed.

In front of them, Lehman still spouted out orders. “I want five-man teams to spread out, an arm’s length apart, scanning every inch of this creek bed. One team on either side. Another team needs to move down along the highway to the next station, then fan out and push north. Meanwhile, another team needs to cover the distance in between.”

“It looks like he’s been dead for several hours, sir,” someone dared to say. “Don’t you imagine Bernard has had a good head start by now?”

Lehman’s voice filled with rage. “I don’t imagine anything, Officer. I don’t deal in guess work or assumption. I deal in cold, hard facts. I want proof that Bernard has moved on. I want every inch of this territory covered. If and when—and only then! —will I conclude he’s had a head start and left the area. Do I make myself clear?” He roared the last question.

As a detective, Mason stayed with the body. Gil joined one of the search teams, even though they all knew it would be fruitless. Unless they literally stumbled upon Bernard’s person, there was no seeing him in this fog.

When he had a moment, Mason excused himself from the two others guarding the murder scene. Lehman’s vehicle had already pealed out and headed back toward command.

Stepping aside for some privacy, Mason pulled out his phone.

One of his first thoughts had been of Sara. Mr. Hewlett, too, and Miss Mamie Hutchins. He felt he owed it to all of the residents in harm’s way to inform them of this new development, no matter if Lehman liked it or not. It was the right thing to do.

He was surprised to learn he hadn’t awakened the dark-haired spitfire. He assumed she was working, until she admitted it was more than just the escaped convict that kept her awake at night. When he questioned her meaning, she clammed up.

But Mason was determined. He was a detective, after all. It was his job to ferret out the truth and find out what people were hiding.

And now, more than ever, he was positive that Sara had something to hide.
