CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Lieutenant Kennedy had no desire to return to the precinct immediately. He needed to think about Alexandra Parker and whether he had handled the interview correctly. He suggested the two men stop at The Metropolitan Grill a couple of blocks away from the office. While the restaurant was a bit pricey for law enforcement salaries, he decided to treat Sergeant Poole and himself to a calm atmosphere where he could order the best New York strip loin in Seattle. He would spring for lunch, and the two could decompress and plan their strategy for facing Prosecutor Lauren Whitlock. Since it was well past 1:00 p.m., the regular on-the-clock working stiffs were back to work and the officers were able to get a table without a reservation. It was the perfect solution to the unexpected dark cloud. The strip loin was succulent, with just the right amount of uniform pink color for Kennedy’s taste. It reminded him of the wonderful nights out he had enjoyed with his wife. However, the memories it brought back were bittersweet. God, I miss my wife and the wonderful nights out where we could savor a meal like this and enjoy the ambiance for hours, he found himself thinking.

The men were back in the office by 2:15, completely sated and recharged by the perfect lunch. Sergeant Poole headed into the temporary evidence room to give Deputy Keller a rundown of the interview and find out any new information she had uncovered. In the meantime, the lieutenant made his way toward the captain’s office. Captain Cooper’s door was open, and Kennedy stopped short when he saw Prosecutor Whitlock deep in conversation with him. They both turned to look at the lieutenant, and he quickly surmised this was an ideal situation because Cooper would surely have his back on the request for a search warrant.

Lauren Whitlock nodded when she saw Kennedy and deadpanned, “Well, Lieutenant, I hear you’ve been very busy on the Sawyer murder but haven’t made much progress yet. I hope you aren’t doing that out of concern for my schedule? I’d really like to get to work on nailing the bastard who did this.”

If he had looked close enough he would have spotted the ever-so-slight twinkle in her eyes. Instead, he froze, stunned at the seemingly harsh words. Though there was no pointed judgment of his work ethic or style, he’d felt his results were mocked and his ego battered, rendering him speechless. Captain Cooper saw his startled reaction and wanted to applaud the prosecutor for having pulled off a good one on the lieutenant, but took pity on him and quickly changed the subject by asking for a brief status report.

Kennedy stumbled a bit but launched into a recap of the morning’s events. Then, looking straight at the prosecutor and raising his voice, he requested a search warrant of the Parker residence, complete with contact details for the daughter and if she deemed it appropriate, a follow-up interview of the daughter by local law enforcement in Connecticut.
