I was almost too nervous to eat breakfast the next morning, but I nibbled on some toast and peanut butter and tossed back a cup of coffee before grabbing my bag and getting into my car.
Sarah seemed pleased to see me, and I told her again that I really appreciated what she was doing.
âOf course. Itâll be fun to have a buddy today,â she said as we went around the shop and made sure everything was set to let in customers. As she did everything, she narrated and I took notes. Since no one was around, I took the chance to ask my most pressing questions about finances. Sarah didnât sugarcoat and gave me more information than I thought she would.
Once the doors open, the time flew by. I manned the register, which gave Sarah and the two other employees a break. I met Holly and Melissa, the employees and they were just as great as Sarah. Holly was in college part time and Melissa worked part time and had two sweet kids.
Halfway through the day, and I was more determined than ever that this was what I wanted for my life. Not only did I want to have a store and share my love of reading, I also wanted to have a nice place to work for someone.
âYouâre really good at this,â Sarah told me that afternoon. âI really hope you do go for it.â
âI am,â I said. âNow I just need to write a business plan and think about a location.â And tell my parents, and Theo, and my friends. I wanted to have my business plan ready so I could hand it to them and prove that I wasnât chasing an impossible dream. There was also a small-business owners association for my county that I wanted to join. They had all kinds of meetings and classes and so forth where I could learn even more.
I was diving headfirst into this, and I wasnât going to do anything half assed. My whole ass was going to open this bookstore.
In addition to the books, I also knew that I had to have gifts and other items, and I hoped that Em would be willing to sell some of her shell creations on consignment.
âAnd youâve got to come up with a name and make sure it isnât already taken,â Sarah said. This was something Iâd been mulling over and over, and I still didnât have the right one yet. For that, I was going to need some help.
Sarah gave me a hug at the end of the day, and I ended up buying a stack of books to thank her for everything. She made me promise to stay in touch and never hesitate to reach out with questions as I got started.
I grabbed a sandwich and cup of soup at the coffee shop next door before heading back to Castleton.
My couch was arriving tomorrow, and I was so ready for it to be in. Once I had it in the room, I was going to get a rug, and start working on the wall art.
