Duke
Duke thinks that Evieâs best friend is the funniest person heâs ever met â and heâs spent five weeks on set with Jack Black before now.
âMagda, ohmygod!â Evie shoots her best friend a look after sheâs made her third joke about oral sex, and then turns to Duke and Daphne. âPlease pardon my best friendâs disgusting mouth,â she says, and Duke is trying to figure out how somebody so serious and focused like Evie can be BFFs with somebody as filter-free and hilarious as Magda.
âI love your best friendâs disgusting mouth.â Duke laughs, shrugging.
âI kind of do too,â echoes Daphne.
âTraitor,â Evie faux-scolds them, narrowing her eyes first at Daphne, then at Duke. âYou too, mister.â She points, accusingly, and Duke holds up his hands like heâs been caught in the crossfire innocently.
âI regret nothing,â he says.
âThatâs just your problem,â Evie chastises.
They could have eaten in the restaurant to the hotel, which would have been fine, itâs a great place, but Magda had been told about a little bistro off the beaten track and had insisted that nobody cared who they were and that if they were bothered, sheâd protect them. Her enthusiasm is contagious. Theyâd relented.
âThis is fun,â Daphne says, smiling. âIâve been wanting to explore a bit. Iâm always just so tired after filming, and Brad never wanted to do anything â¦â She trails off, and Duke wonders if this is the moment sheâs going to tell them theyâve broken up â not because he wants her back, but because Brad seems as close to scum as itâs possible for a man to be.
It isnât lost on him Daphneâs just used the past tense to talk about him, though. He looks at Evie. Has she noticed? Theyâve seemed friendlier since their photoshoot, maybe Daphne has told her all about it. Women open up to each other easily that way, donât they?
âI came just in time to liven things up then, didnât I?â Magda quips. âSeems intense, being on set all day.â
âYeah,â Daphne says. âItâs a lot of waiting around, and getting cold, and weâre the ones on screen but really weâre just a cog in a movie-making machine. We donât even have that much power, to be honest â I mean, I feel that way, I donât know about you, Duke.â
Duke nods. âYeah,â he agrees. âI think the studio heads have the most power.â
âHow so?â asks Evie.
âThey hold the purse strings.â He shrugs. âAnd when you control the money, you control everything else on the movie too â both for making it, and marketing it. A great movie that doesnât get marketed wonât get seen, or you can be really clever with marketing and get a mediocre movie a good return. And as studio head, youâre the one everyone is answerable to, so youâre the one with the most agency.â
âIâd have thought that was directors,â Evie offers, as their main courses arrive.
âThey certainly act like theyâre the puppeteers,â says Daphne. âI mean, not always. Sometimes. The men more so, to be honest.
