Chapter Eleven
âWe are going to have to do something about that car of yours.â We stand at the front window of the house where I can keep an eye on my car while it warms up in the driveway. The chances of having your car stolen from your own driveway while it idles are greater than any other location. And with the way this conversation is going, it wouldnât surprise me if Kirk was planning a heist.
âWhatâs wrong with my car?â I take extreme offence to his comment. I have outright owned very few things in my life, my car is one of them. True, it might have come off the assembly line the year before I was old enough to drive, and it may have more rust spots than is fashionable, but itâs mine. I worked for it and Iâm sure it still has a few more good years in it.
âLetâs start with itâs February and if a bad storm hits, your entire car could be buried under snow in a matter of hours.â
âSo dramatic!â I answer back like Iâm the first person to drive an economy car in the winter. Maybe up here in oil country where everyone drives as big a truck as possible itâs small, but in any other city itâs a perfectly fine size. âYou want me to put twenty-two-inch wheels on my Ford Fiesta? Give it a little more height like all the yahoos driving their big trucks up here?â
âThatâs another thing we should talk about. Youâre going to break an ankle wearing those high heels on ice.â
I shake my head like a cartoon character trying to catch up with the plot running in his mind. âIâm sure the connection between those two topics made sense in your head.â I give him a second to think about how he jumped straight from tires to shoes. I drag a finger down the middle of his chest and say breathily, âYou didnât seem to mind the heels last night.â He gives me a lazy smile. Last night we dressed up like we were going to go dancing then decided to stay in instead. I donât think either of us had any real intentions of leaving the house in the first place. I put on my own little dance show for Kirk leaving nothing on but the high heels and I didnât hear a single complaint about the height of my heels.
He pulls my body in tight to his and I think I'm about to get another searing kiss. Instead, I get, "Maybe you should take my truck. The back is loaded up with sandbags so it weighs a bloody ton and will move through anything. And it just sits here in the garage while I'm out of town."
âThatâs very sweet of you, but Iâm fine with my car.â I know his concern comes from a good place but I canât take his truck. What would I say when I rolled back into Fort McKay with a
